Pepsi fires, plastic surgery disasters, and child molestation accusations aside, Michael Jackson is a genius. Some people may laugh at that statement, but those folks probably aren't included among the more than 104 million people who bought copies of *****'s 1983 record, Thriller, which remains the best-selling album of all time, worldwide. And they probably fail to see the fact that Jackson influenced a whole slew of contemporary hit makers, from Lil' Jon to Justin Timberlake.
Subject(s): Thriller, Michael Jackson

To mark the 25th anniversary of his opus, Jackson's released Thriller 25 (Epic), which includes the original album in its entirety, plus two previously unreleased tracks from the Thriller sessions and five remixes featuring the likes of will.i.am, Fergie, Akon, and Kanye West. The King of Pop also proves yet again that he's the master of slick packaging, with a massive, full-color booklet of lyrics and pre-plasticized ***** photos included alongside a DVD featuring three videos ("Billie Jean," "Beat It," and "Thriller") and Jackson's performance at the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, and Forever TV special in 1983. The latter performance is legendary for being the first time Jackson performed his "moonwalk" dance.
There's not much that hasn't been said about Thriller already, but listeners who haven't heard the album in a while will be struck at how fresh it still sounds. The opening track, "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," suddenly sounds like the sonic springboard for Justin Timberlake's entire FutureSex/LoveSounds album, and hearing Jackson's trademark interjections of "Hee hee" and "Hoo!" brings to mind Lil' Jon's whole "Yeah!" and "What?!" crunk shtick. Thriller was also one of the first albums to include a star-studded guest list, with contributions from Paul McCartney ("The Girl Is Mine"), Vincent Price ("Thriller"), sisters Janet and LaToya ("P.Y.T."), Quincy Jones (producer), and Eddie Van Halen (the guitar solo on "Beat It").
The unreleased tracks from Thriller include an outtake of Price's voice-over session (wherein Price actually asks, "Can you dig it?") and "For All Time," a low-key pop ballad that probably got bumped from Thriller's final track listing for the similarly smooth song "Human Nature."
And the remixes? Well, here's where things get really interesting. The two tracks featuring will.i.am — "The Girl Is Mine" and "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" — are both pretty bland, revved-up with synthesizers and drum programming and layered over with will.i.am's vocal samples. Ultimately, it sounds as if Jackson and will.i.am never shared a studio throughout the process of putting the remixes together. By contrast, the remix of "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" with Akon contains a completely new arrangement, opening with piano and vocal harmonies before sweeping into a bumping techno-soul number that takes even more advantage of the unlikely earworm "Ma ma sa, ma ma se, ma ma coo sa" than the original. The remix of "Billie Jean" with Kanye West is disappointing, mainly because West's presence is felt more as a producer than a performer; the song's all booming club beats and chop-shop sampling, with West interjecting two whole phrases throughout the entire 41/2-minute tune.
The most standout remix here, by far, is, "Beat It" featuring Fergie. will.i.am redeems himself by contributing some stellar, sharp snare drums to the track, but it's Fergie and *****'s visceral vocal swapping that breathes new life into the song — that, and an instrumental switcheroo that sees the original guitar riff reborn as a funky bass line. Michael Jackson's worked hard to create an unparalleled body of art his entire life. And while he's built a reputation as "Wacko *****" with seemingly no effort, listening to a masterpiece like Thriller — and falling in love with it all over again — serves as a potent reminder of why, when all is said and done, Michael Jackson will still be hailed as one of the great musical geniuses of our time.

Janet Jackson showed her fans ‘The Way Love Goes’ when she appeared on a US chat show.
The 41-year-old singer repeatedly made her hands into a heart sign, every time the audience cheered for her when she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live. And when asked by the host whether she had a nickname for her loyal supporters, she came up with the imaginative title “Janet fans”.

Jackson, the sister of singer Michael Jackson, appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel show to promote her 10th studio album ‘Discipline’.

Sony/ATV’s “Musical Notes” #15 - Doo-Wop
Feb 21, 2008

Sony/ATV’s “Musical Notes” #15
A fortnightly newsletter highlighting some of the many classic songs in the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalog.

From Alan Warner, Creative Consultant

*****************

A Leiber & Stoller Doo-Wop Classic!

The year was 1959 when Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller gave LOVE POTION NUMBER 9 to The Clovers. The song’s lyric was a typical Leiber & Stoller tongue-in-cheek storyline which ran as follows:

“I took my troubles down to Madam Ruth
You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth
She’s got a pad on Thirty-fourth and Vine,
Sellin’ little bottles of Love Potion Number 9.

I told her that I was a flop with chicks
“I’ve been this way since 1956”
She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign,
She said “What you need is Love Potion Number 9”.

She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink,
She said “I’m gonna mix it up right here in the sink”.

It smelled like turpentine and looked like Indian ink –
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink”
I didn’t know if it was day or night,
I started kissing ev’rything in sight

But when I kissed the cop down at Thirty-forth & Vine,
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number 9.

The latest “Musical Notes” lists this and a fine group of other Sony/ATV doo-wop songs.

*****************

The popularity of Doo-Wop Music continues to spread…Doo-Wop specials are among the most-watched of the PBS “My Music” oldie shows with a new concert being held next month at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Rhino’s Doo-Wop box-sets are still selling and Sirius now carries a twice-weekly Doo-Wop Gold satellite radio show hosted by the “My Music” creator, T.J. Lubinsky.

Below is an alphabetical list of 25 Doo-Wop records featuring songs published by Sony/ATV. You’ll see original compositions mixed in with revivals of vintage popular standards (such as “Heart And Soul”, “It Could Happen To You”, “That Old Black Magic” and “To Each His Own”) plus even a couple of country classics: “Walkin’ After Midnight” (originally popularized in 1957 by Patsy Cline) and Hank Williams’s “Your Cheatin’ Heart”.

FOOLS FALL IN LOVE (Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller)
By The Drifters (Atlantic/WMG: 1957) US #10 R&B, #69 Pop
A wonderfully rhythmic Leiber & Stoller doo-wop number perfectly suited to The Drifters and one of their outstanding lead singers, Johnny Moore.

HEART AND SOUL (Hoagy Carmichael/Frank Loesser)
By The Cleftones (Gee/Rhino/WMG: 1961) US #10 R&B, #18
Pop Absolute doo-wop classic by the New York-based Cleftones led by Herbie Cox. Song is the old 1930’s chestnut which was earlier cut by another doo-wop group The Spaniels on Vee-Jay in 1958.

IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU (Johnny Burke/Jimmy Van Heusen)
By The Revlons (Parkway/Abkco: 1964)

LET ME EXPLAIN (Chuck Willis)
By The Cadillacs (Josie/Rhino/WMG: 1955)

A LITTLE BIT OF SOAP (Bert Russell)
By The Jarmels (Laurie/EMI: 1961) US #7 R&B, #12 Pop
A 5-man group from Richmond, Virginia, The Jarmels struck gold with this uptempo classic written by Bert Russell aka Bert Berns.

LOVE POTION NO.9 (Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller)
By The Clovers (United Artists/EMI: 1959) US #23 R&B, #23 Pop
Another solid-gold smash which Leiber & Stoller wrote for The Clovers, the group from Washington D.C. who’d racked up a long line of R&B hits on Atlantic beginning in 1951. But “Love Potion” proved to be their one smash success after they’d signed with UA in ’59. Billy Mitchell sang lead, spelling out a typically humor-filled Jerry Leiber lyric.

PLEASE SEND ME SOMEONE TO LOVE (Percy Mayfield)
By The Moonglows (Chess/Universal: 1957) US #5 R&B, #73
Pop Superb doo-wop record with the legendary Harvey Fuqua (later both a Motown songwriter and producer) blissfully singing lead. The song’s author - Percy Mayfield – had topped the R&B charts in 1950 with his
own original version.

PRETTY LITTLE GIRL (Horace Wooten)
By The Chimes (Specialty/Concord: 1956)

RUBY BABY (Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller)
By The Drifters (Atlantic/WMG: 1956) US #10 R&B
Johnny Moore is again fronting The Drifters on this, the original version of the Leiber & Stoller classic song which was later covered so successfully by Dion.

SHIP OF LOVE (Leroy Griffin/Martin Wilson)
By The Nutmegs (Herald/Sony BMG: 1955) US #13 R&B
The Nutmegs’ lead singer Leroy Griffin sobs his way thru this sad song which was the successful follow-up to their debut hit “Story Untold”.

SMOKEY JOE’S CAFÉ (Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller)
By The Robins (Atco/WMG: 1955) US #10 R&B, #79 Pop
This is the song which decades later became the title of the Broadway stage revue of the Leiber & Stoller songbook. The Robins were an L.A. group formed in the late 40’s, half the members of which went on to join The Coasters. The hilarious lyric proves part of the reason that this song will live forever!

STAY AWHILE (Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller)
By The Clovers (United Artists/EMI: 1959)

SUGAR SUGAR (Chuck Willis)
By The Cadillacs (Josie/Rhino/WMG: 1957)
As he did with “Let Me Explain”, Chuck “The King Of The Stroll” Willis wrote this uptempo song which perfectly suited Harlem’s own doo-wop meisters The Cadillacs led by Earl ‘Speedoo’ Carroll.

THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC (Johnny Mercer/Harold Arlen)
By The Robins (Whippit: 1957)
By The Marcels (Colpix/Rhino/WMG: 1963)
This 1940’s movie song was revived by various R&B groups and after The Marcels hit doo-wop paydirt with “Blue Moon” in 1961, it was a great idea to inject their own bass-laced magic into it.

THRILL ME BABY (John Vincent)
By The Five Notes (Specialty/Concord: 1952)

TO EACH HIS OWN (Jay Livingston/Ray Evans)
By The Clovers (United Artists/EMI: 1958)
By The Tymes (Parkway/Abkco: 1964) US #78 Pop

WALKIN’ AFTER MIDNIGHT (Alan Block/Don Hecht)
By Otis Williams & His Charms (DeLuxe/Gusto: 1957)

THE WISDOM OF A FOOL (Abner Silver/Roy Alfred)
By The Five Keys (Capitol/EMI: 1956) US #35 Pop
Rudy West led The Five Keys on a slew of memorable R&B sides for both Aladdin and Capitol. Covered in Britain by comedian Norman Wisdom, this ballad shows off Rudy’s clear-voiced tenor to great effect.

WITCHCRAFT (Dave Bartholomew/Pearl King)
By The Spiders (Imperial/EMI: 1956) US #5 R&B
Written by Dave Bartholomew - one of the founding fathers of New Orleans R&B – “Witchcraft” was the 5th of five big sellers enjoyed by one-time gospel group The Spiders with Chuck Carbo singing lead. Elvis Presley revived the song in 1963.

YOU’RE CHEATIN’ HEART (Hank Williams)
By The Pearls (Onyx: 1957)

YOUNG BLOOD (Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller/Doc Pomus)
By The Coasters (Atlantic/WMG: 1957) US #1 R&B, #8 Pop
By the time that The Coasters recorded this song, their hit-making career was just hitting its stride, so much so that both sides of this blistering 45 rpm single hit #1 on Billboard’s R&B chart: not just the glorious sax-punctuated chant “Young Blood” (later covered by British band Bad Company) but its memorable flipside “Searchin’”
which caught the ears of another legendary UK group, The Hollies!

Finally – check out this super rarity, recommended by Leiber & Stoller’s personal archivist, Randy Poe…
FINDERS KEEPERS (Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller)
By The Crescendos (Atlantic/WMG: 1956)

MOVE OVER, KID ROCK!

Trumpeter/singer/songwriter and bandleader Louis Prima(1911-1978) made some great records with his former wife, Keely Smith, including their 1958 Top 20 smash-hit version of the classic ballad THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC. The song was written back in 1942 by Johnny Mercer & Harold Arlen and was performed by Keely again on the recent Grammy®Awards 50th Anniversary Show along with Kid Rock.

The Michael news is real slim pickings nowadays :(

I don't expect we will be hearing any "significant" MJ news, since Janet's new project has just been released. IF Michael were to make the slightest "peep", it would overshadow all of Janet's efforts regarding the promotion of her latest work.

That being said, I certainly wouldn't mind if he "popped-up" somewhere and we got a new picture. LOL!

Re: 6 Mar07: MJ news andmentionings

Maybe this fit better in Thriller 25 but since its new...

I saw this magazine in 7-Eleven today. I had to pick it up.

Translation: Michael Jackson, The King of Pop - Returning to His Throne

Surprisingly these articles (4 pages) are all good. The magazine defended Michael and explained to readers why he is The King. They even mentioned Martin Bashir being an as***** and received lawsuit for Living With Michael Jackson.

Oh, I have been informed by my friend that he found a Michael Jackson's special package goodies (Price around RM 800). It includes all of his albums, Moonwalker etc.) I will check it this weekend.

Wow, thank you rebirth. You know what, MJ fans should flood the shops and buy out magazines like this to let the media see that good news about MJ sells more than bad news. I hope we e-maol thje mags and shjow our appreciation.

Re: 6 Mar07: MJ news andmentionings

Tidbits from the article ...

"Michael is ready to take over the world. He's got some hot records. William did one, Teddy Riley did one. We're giving Michael a lot of edgy street records. He's putting melodies to some hard party records"

- Big Chuck

Like we all have been informed, William also admitted to Hype Magazine (when he came for a concert couple months ago) that Michael Jackson still maintain his greatness as the King of Pop.

"Michael's voice is still incredible. It's not about crazy beats thats going to be here today but gone tomorrow, but melodies that will stay for a lifetime"

- William (during his interview with Hype magazine)

Re: 6 Mar07: MJ news andmentionings

Thanks for the news, Rebirth and Rasta.

I have some "news". Janet was on the Ms. Jones Radio show on Hot 97 in NYC this morning. (Philadelphia also carries the show on 100.3 the Beat). The djs were told not to ask her some questions regarding the rumored child she supposedly had with James DeBarge (The family is STILL on that) and our man Michael. So, the idiot, Michael Shawn (big time MJ hater) decided to be smart and asked her. Janet answered the questions regarding those two topics. I am going to mention the MJ part - Janet was asked about Mike and she basically said that she will not talk about Michael anymore and that she has no comment on her brother (or something like that). I did not listen to the interview because I was working and did not put on the radio. LOL. Once I put on the radio, that is when I found out about the interview. I was like, "DAMN!" LOL! I knew about this because my radio station did a promo for the show and played that part of the interview with Janet. So, anyway, I just wanted to share. I would say something about her comment but I will wait and see what you guys have to say about it.

Re: 6 Mar07: MJ news andmentionings

Thanx RP for the news and Rebirth for the pics/article.

Re: 6 Mar07: MJ news andmentionings

rofl they like Beat It 2008, the worst song on the album. I'd only consider it the best remix on the album if they SCRAPPED FERGIE COMPLETELY, then it would be good.

Re: 6 Mar07: MJ news andmentionings

wow, thanks for the info!!

In an unlikely pairing, Fall Out Boy and John Mayer have teamed up to record a cover version of the Michael Jackson hit 'Beat It'.

The track, which originally featured guitarist Eddie Van Halen on lead guitar, will feature Mayer on guitar and the FOB crew doing the rest.

The track will be included on Fall Out Boy's forthcoming DVD release 'Live In Phoenix', but in the meantime you can play it on Fall Out Boy's website!

I know it is not really "news" but I like to share these things.

A client of mine (who knows that I am a Michael Jackson fan) said to me today "I went on YouTube to show my daughters Michael Jackson. And now they bug me every night to watch something about him."

I smiled.

Her daugthers are 11 and 13.

SoBe Lizards to Star on Billboards

NEW YORK This year's Super Bowl viewers saw a group of lizards dancing with supermodel (and cell phone enthusiast) Naomi Campbell to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" in a spot for Pepsi's SoBe Life Water.

Directed by Peter Arnell, CEO of independent The Arnell Group here, the spot was the shop's first work for SoBe. Arnell was handed the estimated $20 million business late last year without a review, per sources. Publicis Groupe-backed Bartle Bogle Hegarty had handled the account. (BBH held the business for about a year but never produced any work for the client.)

The Super Bowl spot was just the beginning of a marketing push for the brand. Arnell's second effort, which is set to launch on March 19 in New York's Times Square and then move across the country, will focus on billboards that highlight the lizard, the Web site Thrillicious.com and show off the five SoBe flavors: blackberry grape, pomegranate cherry, orange tangerine, strawberry kiwi and passion fruit citrus.

"This billboard blitz will enable consumers to experience on a street level the uniqueness of SoBe, the SoBe lizards and the overall "Thrillicious" movement from New York to Los Angeles -- no matter where they work or live," said Massimo d'Amore, CEO of PepsiCo Americas Beverages, in a statement,

The dancing lizards are meant to represent the silhouette of a lizard that is seen on all bottles of SoBe.

"We created a series of characters that best represent the spirit of the product," said Arnell. "There's a great love for this type of character who is outrageous, underground and friendly but with an edge."

Arnell, who designed Jackson's Invincible cover art and marketing campaign, has big plans for the lizards. "They're the Nike swoosh of SoBe. There will be merchandise and we'll follow them around," he said. "We're not going to be the brand that works for them; they're going to work for us."

While Arnell is cagey about future plans, he does offer this hint: "All you need to do is think Disney."

You got that right terrell.

And the funny thing is, Janet is on these shows to promote HER OWN work, but as soon as she sits down, the 1st thing the interviewer wants to know is "what is MJ doing."

I don't blame Janet, I'd be like "I'm here to talk about ME, not my brother!" LOL!

Re: 6 Mar07: MJ news andmentionings

terrell,

I agree! if this dude is a hater, he wouldn't be concerned with where Michael is or what he's doing. Deep down if Michael makes an appearance or performs somewhere, this dude will be watching just like the rest of us
