Michael Jackson’s Mother, the Estate, and Money–the Real Story

By: Roger Friedman in Celebrity // June 27th, 2010 at 11:26 PM UTC

After a weekend of wrong headed reporting and terrible TV specials that didn’t get much right–like ABC’s ridiculous “20/20″ extravaganza and Ian Halperin‘s hideous “documentary”–here’s the real story of Katherine Jackson, Michael’s estate, and money.

Mrs. Jackson went behind her own lawyer’s back–that’s Adam Streisand–and signed a contract with Howard Mann, the Toronto entrepreneur. Mann has said on TV that his deal with Mrs. Jackson makes her a wealthy woman. But that’s not exactly true.

According to the contract between Mann and Mrs. Jackson, which I’ve seen, Katherine Jackson is getting $10,000 in advance and 10,000 a month for promoting audio and video recordings that could be turned into a book or biography called “The Katherine Jackson Story.” The contract was signed on February 3, 2010 and witnessed only by Sonia Lowe, Mann’s collaborator. Streisand has never seen the contract. “The Katherine Jackson Story” became her book, “Never Can Say Goodbye.”
“My expectation is Katherine nets $10 million,” says Mann of Mrs. Jackson’s participation in the project. He thinks “Never Can Say Goodbye” will sell a million copies. So far it’s sold between 25,000 and 50,000.

The contract for these “performances” states that Mrs. Jackson will receive $5000 for promotional appearances. In other words, she was paid for showing up at the Jackson family event on Saturday at the Beverly Hilton. That may be why she agreed to return from Indiana on Saturday morning to promote “Never Can Say Goodbye.” Those audio recordings, transcribed and written by Sonia Lowe, became the copy for the book. The video interview was used in part for the NBC “Dateline” show on Friday night.

Insiders are scratching their heads wondering Mrs. Jackson entered into such an agreement, especially without legal representation. Going along proper channels, Mrs. Jackson could have picked up a seven figure advance from any New York publishing house.
“we did the deal between us,” Mann says. “Who was she going to call? Adam Streisand? He’s paid by the estate.”
Indeed, until the estate is settled–there are still outstanding claims–Michael’s estate is paying his mother’s lawyer’s fees. But that is not unusual.

And it’s not like Mrs. Jackson needs the money. According to those familiar with the as yet unsettled estate, Mrs. Jackson’s financial life since Michael died has been an easy one. Before he died, she was constantly in debt with the threat of foreclosure.
But since then, the Jackson executors have paid off the $5 million mortgage on the Encino estate known as Hayvenhurst (and always owned by Michael, not his parents); given Mrs. Jackson a new $90,000 Cadillac Escalade; paid salaries for everyone at the house including private chefs and Mrs. Jackson’s secretary, Janice; and all of her needs separate from funds which the children receive.
“She’s never been denied one thing she’s asked for,” says an estate source.

But Howard Mann insists that Mrs. Jackson is receiving “only” nine thousand dollars a month. It’s not enough, he says, to cover her expenses in Encino and at homes she maintains in Las Vegas and Gary, Indiana.
As for the children attending private school this fall, my sources say Mrs. Jackson has never even asked the estate for help or guidance.
Altogether, I am told, approximately $8 million has been spent on Mrs. Jackson this year including the buying out of the mortgage. So where has it all gone? And why would she make a deal for $10,000 a month to be in business with a total stranger?

The overriding theory: that Joe Jackson–who has no income and has tried to get an allowance of his own from the estate without success–is prevailing upon his much beleaguered wife for funds. He lives in Las Vegas, for example; Mrs. Jackson does not.

thanks for posting the article. he's Roger Friedman, a tabloid journalist, but he was right about this one.

How prophetic was Michael? Read the lyrics to threatened-

What you have just witnessed could be the end of a particularly terrifying nightmare.
It isn’t. It’s the beginning.

I guess the words can apply here:(

Money.
Money...
Lie for it
Spy for it
Kill for it
Die for it
So you call it trust
But I say it's just
In the devil's game
Of greed and lust
They don't care
They'd do me for the money
They don't care
They use me for the money
So you go to church
Read the Holy word
In the scheme of life
It's all absurd
They don't care
They'd kill for the money
Do or dare
The thrill for the money
You're saluting the flag
Your country trusts you
Now you're wearing a badge
You're called the "Just Few"
And you're fighting the wars
A soldier must do
I'll never betray or deceive you my friend but...
If you show me the cash
Then I will take it
If you tell me to cry
Then I will fake it
If you give me a hand
Then I will shake it
You'll do anything for money...
Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Insurance?
Where do your loyalties lie?
Is that your alibi?
I don't think so
You don't care
You'd do her for the money
Say it's fair
You sue her for the money
Want your pot of gold
Need the Midas touch
Bet you sell your soul
Cuz your God is such
You don't care
You kill for the money
Do or dareThe thrill for the money
Are you infected with the same disease
Of lust, gluttoney and greed?
Then watch the ones
With the biggest smiles
The idle jabbers...Cuz they're the backstabbers
If you know it's a lie
Then you will swear it
If you give it with guilt
Then you will bear it
If it's taking a chance
Then you will dare it
You'll do anything for money...
Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
You say you wouldn't do it
For all the money in the world
I don't think soIf you show me the man
Then I will sell him
If you ask me to lie
Then I will tell him
If you're dealing with God
Then you will hell him
You'll do anything for money
Anything
Anything
Anything for money
Would lie for you
Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil

Unfortunately, none of this surprises me. I want to give Katherine the benefit of the doubt, but as long as she still readily admits to being married to Joe (as she did in the Oprah interview), and his ongoing association with a cast of dubious characters, it doesn't look too promising.

It seems that throughout the years Katherine has taken a back seat to things involving the running of Michael's life/career, allowing Joe to do as he deemed(s) necessary. And it continues even now. It unfortunately does look like "money" is the driving force, with Joe and his cronies behind that driving force.

I'm truly saddened to see things haven't changed. Her heart seems to be in the right place, but Joe apparently still hold's unto a piece of that heart.

well we all knew about katherines dealings with mann. and one thing that is plain as the day is long is the motive.gayle king talking about the kids being offered up certainly goes with this. just as we thought katherine is just using the kids in order to make $. i guess alsong as the kids play ball and take part in interviews etc then there will be no issues but what happens when they say no. then things may change with mann as katherine cannot make deal for the kids.she handed the kids on a plate to mann to use to promote their books etc. yet has no legal standing do so. its like the koreans all over again but this time its mikes kids shes using.

from what ive read katherine cannot make deals. all financial deals to do with the kids are controlled by the estate and the kids lawyer. katherine is only the guardian interms of raising them

Re: Katherine Jackson's contract with Howard Mann

Sadly, but Katherine is the only sane person left in this family. She maybe greedy, but at least I'd like to believe she loves them. Leave those poor kids with any other member, say like Jermaine, and you"ll have those kids signed up for child pornography movie deal within a few months...

As someone mention here before, "don't give them any ideas". :(

I can't believe Katherine did this. I hope the family isn't telling the kids that they're contractually obligated to do interviews.

What a disaster.

BTW - did anyone notice the logo for "Vintage Pop Media"? One side of the V appears to be an image of MJ doing the Smooth Criminal lean.

Why is the rest of the family not stopping Katherine from doing business with these weasels

i am speechless.does any of 3T responded on this as they were pretty quick about the songs or they forgot that their uncles legacy is these 3 angles.

What the heck did MJ do to ever deserve any of this?????

Nothing will surprise me anymore!

thanks for posting the article. he's Roger Friedman, a tabloid journalist, but he was right about this one.

Because Howard Mann told him directly.

And he was also right about the saga surrounding the album...

Nope. We have hammered them with this...they only want to discuss the Cascio tracks. A bunch of money-hungry ****

I just sent a message to a buddy of theirs....but I am pretty sure they won't comment on this.

I am so over 3T....

Yeah, I used to really respect them. But with the way things have been unfolding, I am sorry to say that their opinions have dimmed in my eyes.

they have the contract, the actual contract. they aren't make this up they have the proof.

It is TMZ, but in this case they provided the actual document. So, we can see for ourselves what is agreed upon. I know TMZ is not always to be trusted (actually, usually not) but when they have the actual document for us to read, it can't be as easily denied.

And in this case, I wish they were wrong as it is so disturbing.

Michael's own mother, the saint mother he worshiped so much, bound his MINOR CHILDREN in a life long contract with a PORNOGRAPHER! Michael has died a billion times after his actual death that's for sure.

Found a post on another board - the contract was looked over by someone who appears to have a legal background and she's saying that TMZ have misinterpreted it and based on the terminology, the contract does not appear to legally bind the children.

Scroll down for "scarlett's" post - she also explains the payment schedule to Katherine:

Certainly hope the part about MJ3 is true.

I don't see as per Scarlett's post how this contract is not binding MJ3.
For one thing, why does it even mention them in the Recitals no 7) if the contract is between KJ and VPM? Who cares whose guardian Katherine is?
Second, as I read it, it implies that there's a window for binding OTHER estate beneficiaries into this, specifically those mentioned (KJ and MJ3).

This contract is no good. Point is is there a legal framework that renders this contract void for MJ3? In other words are the minors protected by law against any outrageous contract their guardian may have signed?

Exactly.

Why are they even mentioned? Katherine's husband and her own children aren't listed. Only Michael's.

i think the Jacksons are giving the Estate a hard time" like the album fiasco" so they can make use of the children and Michael's name, whle the Estate busy fighting the press...did not they do this to MJ many times according to the bodygaurds.

Teddy and the bodygaurds, both mentioned how MJ tried hard to push his family away because of the problems they cause him...even his German manager Wizner " although i do not like him" said that if MJ knew he would die soon he would not handed his kids to the Jacksons !

at this point even without a legal contract it's pretty clear how they're gonna dispose of Michael's 3 kids....it was just a question of time....it's really depressing how you cannot trust even the closest members of the family like 3T...but i thought Rebby had M's bets interests at heart and look what happened,I though Janet was very close to M as well and look what happened....KJ is no different, legal contract or not the kids are destined to be paraded around, they are smart yes but they're still kids and they have an intire family composed of dozen of ppl who have ALL the same economical interests because they are the ones with no money....for them those kids are not orphans they are just little kids who won billions of dollars at the lottery while they're left empty handed...it's only a qustion of time before even the best ppl turn nasty and expect something for themselves.

I really hope they won't brainwash them into believing it's their duty to "defend their father's memory" and have them make the turns at events or tv specials...those poor kids....

I have read the contract, and it doesn't seem to have been written by a competent attorney.

Katherine cannot "bind" the children to ANYTHING commercial. She has guardianship as to the daily activities of the children, their educations, safety, health, and those sorts of things. But NOT as to "managing" them financially. That is the provenance of the Estate, only.

Margaret Lodise is the children's attorney, but she is not to oversee the daily activities/guardianship of the children, but to see that they are protected financially. If there is abuse, either physical or emotional, that is an area for Child Protective Services, in L.A.

The children are not able to sign a binding contract until they are 18, respectively. Katherine is not authorized to make financial decisions FOR the children. I'm quite sure this "contract" would not hold water.

Next?
