King of pop?

I see titles like KOP etc are a mark of respect for an individual's contribution to music, achievements etc rather than a measure of an individual's ego  its great to recognize those who have achieve monumental goals that pave way for others etc etc. In every respect MJ has done so. The KOP title though I find limiting in encompassing the vast areas in which MJ's legacy if you like have benefitted.

again...way is not quincy jones the king of pop?

Seriously? Why should Q be KOP? Why didn't the title of King of rock and roll go to Elvis's producer? Why didn't the title of Queen of Soul go to Aretha's producer? Why is it ok for others to be given titles (even though they never wrote any songs let alone produce) but not MJ?

Just love to see what he is up to!....and I still love mj as a human! and the way his mind work.
Is just alle the crazyness around him i dont like!

So why join a MJ forum? Surely you can see what MJ is up (TV, internet, radio etc) to or his 'craziness' without joining an MJ forum. Lol

Michael Jackson isn't the King of Pop anymore.

Noone holds that title, imo.

Why not? When did he loose his title. Also why is it that Elvis can keep a title long after his death but MJ in your opinion lost his title?

He hasn't released anything lately to show he's still worthy of the title. I'm sorry! He's living in the past and needs to release something new. That's the harsh reality :)

I guess the past just took a giant leap into the presant charts in the form of
'Thriller 25' Now Thats the Harsh Reality.:D

Then Elvis isn't the King of Rock & Roll then. Okay, I'll accept that. :)

James Brown hasn't been the Godfather of Soul then? That's a warped way of thinking man.

umm...no. You're wrong. :D I'm guessing everyone's just going nameless anymore....
hmm...so who's King of Rock n' Roll? no one? Or the Godfather of Soul?

You're totally missing the point lol. Argh.

When MJ brought out Thriller he was the King. Now he's using that again, and not bringing out any new material! He's living in the past.

Don't get me wrong I love MJ, but be realistic about it.

it ain't the past if people still like it and mtv and other channels and all videos are still using the thriller mentality, which they are today. and besides...all the songs on radio are staying in styles that are old..and are sampling from the past. and besides, there's more than MJ that are involved. there's sony. and besides he always includes material that we haven't heard before. and many people like it. meanwhile he IS working on new material. so i mean what do you want?

When MJ brings out some new material and really gets back into the game without having to rely on past work such as Thriller, I'll be proud to call him the King of Pop.

Till then I'll just continue to listen to his past work, which is fantastic, but her.. aren't you ready for something new?

I know a hell of a lot of people that share my exact view, and

I know a hell of a lot of people who don't share this view. So on that note, I'm happy with agreeing to disagree on this one :p

i'm ready to be patient. meanwhile you can't say the past is the past if it's still being done by EVERYBODY at the present time.

also..until someone is big enough to take his title he still has it. and hey..if you don't call him King..many other people will.:)

That's completely fine with me :)

U say i'm clueless but u can't answer my question.

is elvis the KING?

is JB the GODFATHER?

since they aren't making music anymore?

Since what's "current" seems like the MOST IMPORTANT?

Is Soulja boy the King of Hip Hop since he's the most popular?

Does artistic merit have nothing to do with it anymore?

Psh, I'M clueless lol

So? Elvis is dead, yet he's still the King Of Rock 'N Roll. Aretha Franklin hasn't had a hit in years, yet she's still the Queen Of Soul.

Michael Jackson doesn't even have to release one more song, he'll always be the King Of Pop. That's not something you can take away from him.

Haha, I love getting shot down for having the same opinion as many others, it really brings out the best in people :)

People are going to argue both sides. We can all argue our point till we're blue in the face, but I stand by my point and you can stand by yours. Either way, none of us will change our minds on the matter. So agree to disagree :)

I love forums.

ur not getting shot down for having the same opinion as many others...LOL Is that how you support your opinion, because a lot of other people have it?

I guarantee there are a lot of people that think MJ is the KOP. SO?? That's not why I think he's the King just cuz everyone else says he is. lol

Thing is, ur not arguing ur side. It's called debating (do people not know how to do that anymore or something?). I posed and argument, now where's ur's besides "MJ's not doing anything now" (which has already been counter argued lol) and "clueless"? That's what I'm interested in knowing.

Debating is about sharing information and viewpoints, not getting people to change their minds. (did people forget that????)

i think it's because a public title is such a subjective term.

you can look at music like a sport and argue that Mike is the greatest. or you can look at it artistically and realise there are many "contenders" and each brought us something unique to help shape the industry - although, currently, that's not really a statement to be proud of. but nonetheless, we've had many geniuses in our Pop history going back to the likes of Marvin Gaye & Curtis Mayfield, to Stevie & Vandross and to Mike & Prince. each different in their own right, and yet each inspired the generation of geniuses after.

but i wouldn't think many would take a title that seriously as to ignore the fact that it's not a competition. at least, i hope not.
Achievements and talent apart, no other artist has had such a global impact thatMichael Jackson had.
People whom i've met who are around or over 30 years old had to be a fan at some point
of their life, even if they're not into western music.
Prince and the rest you've mentioned who undeniably had left the mark in the pop culture, are known to those who have some knowledge of the pop history.

Okay.

MJ has sold more albums than Madonna, Britney Spears, NSYNC, BSB, and Justin Timberlake combined. His place is/should be etched in stone until a pop star actually outdoes him, which I don't see happening in our lifetime.

You've evaded this question every time, so just for clarification: is Elvis The King of Rock & Roll and James Brown the Godfather of Soul? Yes or no. If the answer is no then I'll disagree with your logic, but at least then you'd be fair to all parties.

Fine.

James Brown performed to the day he died. Elvis did the same. MJ hasn't performed since 2002.

Neither continually re-released their old catalogue, time after time, after time. Let me see with MJ.. umm.. HISTory (i won't really count that as it had new decent material), Number Ones, Greatest Hits volume 1 (re-re release), The Essential, Ultimate Collection, Special Editions, the list goes on.

MJ needs to bring out new stuff and start performing again. I have NO doubt he will, and have all the faith in him :) I believe he will come out with the goods.

Okay well in the 80s MJ did 2 albums for that whole decade. Does that make him not KOP because he puts out albums at different intervals than others? Does that make his music have any less impact?

Is it the quality or the quantity that gives people titles?

I'm willing to bet it's quality. There are people who come out with albums every year and they have no impact whats so ever. they perform all the time everywhere and they do nothing special. Soooo now what? LOL

It's quality. MJ hasn't put out quality material since 1995. That's 13 years. And that's also my opinion, so you can regard it or disregard it, I don't mind.

I'm gonna finish with this cause I have a job interview to go to lol. Michael, I have faith in you, the time is now. Step up :)

He's also been a tad busy since 2002. Unless of course you wanted for him to get right back into it following the trial, so that he was current enough for you. It isn't enough that he's already the biggest and most successful pop star there's ever been. At the end, it's all about accomplishments. How much does one really have to accomplish before their place is etched in stone? Your demands are kinda funny, because most fans want new music for their own enjoyment, but you're actually acting as though he has something left to prove, so that he's good enough for you to call him the King. It really is hilarious that being the most successful pop star of all-time is not enough for him to simply hold on to KOP. I can see why he's so uppity about pleasing his fans. Even outdoing everyone else in the genre is not enough unless he gives you more CDs. Strange, but diffrent strokes.

By the way, James Brown may have performed until his final days, but he wasn't tearing up the mainstream charts, was he? Doesn't really matter to me, because he'd already proven everything he had to a long time ago.

Ok you win. Michael's the King of Pop and always will be. I admit, I just had to do that cause I was bored.

Good for discussion though hey? :p

i won't argue with that (in terms of modern pop artists - i.e. after Elvis and Beatles).

People whom i've met who are around or over 30 years old had to be a fan at some point
of their life, even if they're not into western music.
Prince and the rest you've mentioned who undeniably had left the mark in the pop culture, are known to those who have some knowledge of the pop history.
the problem is, to me music is everything and saying King of Pop - on the music side, is flawed. you can't compare nor measure the influence and impact of those popular artists on music. in fact, the great majority of the modern soulful acts that i have come be a fan of cite the likes of Marvin Gaye and Prince more than they would Michael - and yet i enjoy Mike's music a bit more than those guys.

(btw, can music fans stop using record sales as indicators? because Britney Spears outsold Stevie Wonder)

and i can see where people are coming from in terms of entertainment - if i would have to choose a silly public title for anyone (you can see i'm not a fan of titles), then it would be King of Entertainment for MJ. that would suit best, i'd say.

otherwise, i'll stick with the obvious fact that each great popular artist is doing their own thing (otherwise they wouldn't be attributed with greatness), and comparisons would be without logic, imo.

According to your argument it doesn't matter what it is, as long as it's current. As long as he's doing SOMETHING. As long as he's doing something now...so u must not prefer Invincible, but Invincible did go to number one in 14 countries so i dunno why u skipped that one when u say 13 years of nothing.

And believe me Invincible was more quality than anything that came out in 2001 even if u don't think it's up to par with MJ's other albums.

So it's been 7 years since his last project. Between the Bad and Dangerous release, he took 6 years. And MJ was the KOP THEN. I guess MJ isn't the king of pop between 1986 and 1992 right? LOL Even though no one has topped his accomplishments. Makes no sense, explain that one to me.

People have come up with good arguments here, so I'm wondering y u can't come up with any that support urs yet u continually like to avoid questions. People just don't have opinions to have them...they can usually support them.

Just to sum it up and make it all simple.

If you disagree with MJ being the King of POP? then that's your opinion and you may even be on the wrong board. Michael did not publicly come out and state " You all should should call me the KING OF POP, cause I'm the greatest etc.." I don't think he is egotistical to bluntly come out with such, furthermore the title was given to him by Elizabeth Taylor because she believed(s) that he was the King of Rock, Pop and Soul and I agree. Most of the songs Michael has released have been far out (IMO) Brilliant! his music has all the elements, it made you laugh, dance, cry, happy etc... he puts alot of feeling and emotion in these songs so it would be easier for the listener to relate to, I think that that's how all music should be, it's very important for the artist to capture the mind of listening ears, once your caught, your hooked and that's a good sign of great/timeless music.

Michael's the King of Pop because he's sold more records and broken more records and holds more records then any other recording artist in history. It's got jack all to do with "what he's done lately". It's called "pop" and it's an abbriviation for the world "popular", meaning how much commercial success have you achieved.

Did you all convienently forget that Michael's entire life was put on hold, was actually haulted to a dead stop, for over two years because his life was hanging in the balance? And are you all really suggesting that Michael so easily forget about that and recover right away, just bounce back and do something on the world stage, while everyone, EVERYONE is watching, immeadietely following? And did you all really expect Michael to just turn around and act like nothing had happened when he was being attacked maliciously for the two years leading up to that trial, over that documentary, over him holding Blanket over a balcony for 2 seconds, for this, that and nine million other things? Some fans really are too much sometimes. Michael couldn't do anything for damn near 5 years, from 2001, in which he released an entirely new album which his record lable decided to kill, all the way through 2005. That's not even including recovery time from what happened to him. Do you realize that Michael lost 20lb. during the trial? 20lb., to someone like him, is a massive amount of weight. He was really sick, really sick, and he needed to recover. That's just physically. Emotionally, it will probably never fully go away. But look, less then a year after what happened to him, he was back in the studio and is, as of this very moment, working his ass off to put out a good album for all of us. So don't come in here talking some smack about how he hasn't done anything since 2002. PLEASE!

That's your opinion (as you stated), though. Personally I prefer Invincible over Thriller, and I'm sure there are a lot of people who hold Invincible in high regards, too.

Also, by your argument, Elvis shouldn't still be the King Of Rock 'N Roll, since his later output wasn't as good as his early albums. Which is ridiculous, because he became legendary because of his early works. Just like Michael became famous because of Off The Wall/Thriller/Bad/Dangerous. ;)
