American Idol did Paul McCartney and John Lennon songs last week and The Beatles songs this week, and someone on the AI messageboards asked if Michael owned the songs and got any money or if Paul owned them. I told them that Michael did buy half of the sony/ATV music catalogue which has the Beatles songs in it. I don't think it's all of them, but I'm not sure? They said that Paul did NOT initially turn it down like I said, but I'm pretty sure I've got the story straight. He had explained how the whole thing worked to Michael, he had a chance to buy it and decided not to at the time, Michael bought it, and then Paul was mad at him for doing it, and it ruined their friendship. Is that right?

You were right. People who love the Beatles have convinced themselves that Michael TOOK the catalogue from Paul. That is just the way they want to see it. But if they were to be honest with themselves, they would admit that....

1. Paul is a very selfish man. This is the same Paul who tried to switch John Lennon's names from the songwriting credits and put it last....he wanted it to be McCartney/Lennon instead of Lennon/McCartney. Upset Yoko. And poor Lennon had already died and couldn't defend himself.

2. If Michael was not black or if Sony were a 100% owner of this catalogue, no one, including the Beatles fans would be fussing about Sony TAKING Paul's music.

3. Paul had the first opportunity to buy back this music, but he thought that $20 mil was too much to pay for it. In other words, that music did not mean that much to him. If Yoko had first dibs because of Lennon, then Paul had first dibs too. She declined....and so did he. So Michael didn't take anything from Paul.

4. When Sir whatshisname, and Northern owned the songs, you never heard anyone in the media complaining, nor did you hear the Beatles fans complaining. But as soon as Michael got it, everybody jumped on Michael and started painting him as the worst friend. Michael is no worst than Paul. He saw an opportunity and he took it.

I'm glad for the explanation. My brother said to me today that when Michael "stole" the Beatles catalogue from Paul, he "lost all respect for him." I didn't know the full story, so I didn't really know what to say. I also have some friends who are Beatles fans who think badly of Michael for owning the catalogue. If they ever say anything about it again, I'll use everything in AllTheLovelyFlowers post to defend him. :)

yeah that ATLW breakdown...we have to spread whenever misinformed morons say Michael took the beatles catalogue away from Paul McC...sometimes people are in so much denial they just don't want to see the reality of it..it was a mere business dealing one in which Michael even urged Paul to purchase it with him...

The Beatles had already sold the songs, they did not own it anymore. They got paid for it. Paul had a chance to buy it back on the cheap and he did not want to do so. MJ bought it dear, and has been paoying the price for it every since. Yet they say racism doesn't exist anymore?:mello:

Paul said himself that Michael told him 2 times that he was going to bid on the catalogue and he just laughed at him. He probaly thought that the little singer and dancer from Gary Ind. would not be so ambitious.

  I don't know why people are so shocked that Paul wouldn't always use the best business acumen anybody can mess up on a business deal such as the Beatles did back in the day and Paul is no exception for example this whole circus with Heather Mills, a nice prenup would have killed all of that!

I borrow some quotes from Simon "The beatles nights on AI made me boring to tears". :p

Will they have a MJ night? Although I don't want to see them murder any MJ songs, but I do want to see how they'll cover MJ music, that will be very interesting, just some random thoughts:cool:

If you thought Simon's comments on the Beatles song being boring and mediocre were bad, then just wait to see what he says about the songs if AI does a Michael Jackson theme. Simon hates MJ and would never let AI do a MJ theme. Even if they didn't listen to him and did one anyone, all his comments on the night will be how much Michael sucks. "Terrible song, but atleast you sung it better than Michael Jackson". Remember on Britain's Got Talent when that puppeteer did some MJ songs and Simon said "I find a puppet more entertaining than Michael Jackson" or something. They guy will rip MJ to shreds if AI did a MJ theme.

i dont think they could even sing Michaels songs the notes are too difficult to reach only Mihcael can sing those songs.

:mad:Really? I never know that Simon hates Michael. That actually changed my feelings toward him. He does always seem full of himself and arrogant, but I actually find he's the only suggestive judge on AI. But now he's just a big head and downright ignorant to me. You can say MJ's music is not your cup of tea, but you can never say "he sucks" , that's just hateful and biased. -_-

Yeah, that's my thoughts too. We rarely see any artist cover Michael songs, part of the reason is that they're very hard to sing, those notes and emotion only belong to Michael.:)

Seriously, who cares what Simon has to say about Michael.

He HATES everybody and everything, that's all part of his act. And at this point in the game, Simon's act is boring and repetitive.

As long as they spell Michael's name correctly on the $-CHECK-$, Simon can say whatever his little heart desires. LOL!

Paul is very greedy.. check this out..

Paul sued my school for using 1 minute of his song in a play without his concent. I think he sued for some hundreds dollers.. lol!

Michael bought and owned the whole Beatles catalog of over 250 songs... he then did a joint-venture in 1995 with Sony.. where they went into a 50/50 split with both their catalogs...

also I take Simon's comments about Michael so seriously.

Michael, Simon and Simon.. have a business relationship..

And another thing.....the very reason why Paul and John had to sell the stupid songs is because they didn't want to pay the enormous taxes on it. They would rather sell the catalogue than pay the taxes. So that should tell you right there just how important those songs were to Paul and John.

And another thing....Paul was the one who TAUGHT MJ about songs ownership. Although I think Michael had a good idea after watching how Berry Gordy banked on all the Motown artists including himself. So Michael knew where the real money was being made.

I did not new that, but it doesn't surprise me. Simon is just an arrogant ass, though is not like anyone really takes him that seriously!

Clearly the songs didn't meant much to Paul, since he declined the opportunity to buy them back so why make a huge deal out of MJ doing what is most likely his best business deal! Paul was dumb and Michael smart, people should just get over it.

Paul was not a little kid, he had been in the business longer than Michael and he simply was too dumb to realize what he was giving up, that's not Michaels fault.

I could be wrong, but I have a feeling that the Simon "persona" that appears on American Idol, would not be the same Simon "persona" that would appear in a business meeting with MJ. LOL!

I bet you are right..

alot of AI contest (past and present).. use something under Sony/AtV.. in some way.. so I don't think Simon Cowell is the same ass wipe at the business table with Michael..as he is on the show alot of
that is an 'act'

and AI did do something with T25... that Dance Crew thing on MTV.. was by Randy Jackson.. and I am sure produced /backed by Simon Fuller.. who is the originator of AI and all those Idol shows worldwide...

And that MTV dance off show could very well be what Michael and Simon Fuller were talking about when they were seen in Vegas. Media folks just assumed that they had to be talking about AI.

 Get outta here! When did this happen?

Paul owns Buddy Hollys and Other acts Catelog. in fact when he signed with Sony then CBS records back in 1980 he got a deal that was rare in that he got publishing on other artists. he ain't the richest artist in music by accident. dude is a Shark on the business side but you gotta be.

Paul Mccartney and Barry White were very instrumental in hipping MJ to the Publishing game and the rewards.

Mccartney could have bought the Beatles stuff back in 1980 for 20 million dollars but didn't want to spend the loot.

Simon on Idol has said some good and some indifferent things regarding Michael Jackson over the years. he did say that while Usher is doing Good that he doesn't leave you with the kind of feeling in his songs as Michael Jackson did back in the day.

I'm tired of Beatle night because most of the acts just butcher up the songs. but glad MJ is getting paid Hee Hee!!

I think if there would be an MJ night, it'll just make me appreciate the way MJ does things even more.

And that would be a REAL CHALLENGE for those contestants.

That's not fair to say. Those songs mean the world to him. He was not stupid, or didn't care about the songs, he just didn't have enough money to buy them.

So the Beatles never owned their own music? I mean, why were they not in possession of their own music from jumpstreet.

Has Michael always owned the rights to his solo music, from the very beginning? I know MJ owns the rights to his solo music now, but has it always been like that?

yes, if I remember correctly Michael STOLE the Northern Songs catalogue for around $47 million  that THIEF

I'm not sure if the Beatles ever owned their own music, and I'm actually not so sure Michael owns his own music. Not all of it anyway. I only found a few MJ songs, mostly from Invincible when I searched the Sony ATV website:

Oh I'm sorry, I should have explained better. When I asked about the rights to MJ's solo music, I was talking about the music which is within his Mijac Music Publishing company. I believe there is a substantial number of his own music in that catalog.

Does anyone know how long MJ has had Mijac Music Publishing company? (Rasta Pasta, where you at? LOL!)

any song that Michael has put a pen to is under Mijac Publishing... I am not sure on the number of years.. but his music from Off the Wall is under Mijac...

He comes from the book of Motown.. Berry Gordy taught him well..
