Michael Jackson's family is offended by a comment made on "American Idol" last night by a contestant, who made light of MJ's devastating injury that triggered years of drug abuse.

If you saw the show, James Durbin told Ryan Seacrest after his performance, "I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around -- so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a 'Pepsi moment.'"

The "Pepsi moment" is a reference to the 1984 incident where Michael Jackson's hair caught on fire during the filming of a Pepsi commercial, severely burning his scalp -- an injury that triggered an addiction to prescription drugs that may have ultimately taken his life.

A Jackson family rep tells TMZ, "We were shocked to see this. It's nothing to make light of and everybody should be focusing on who was responsible for Michael's death."

The rep says Joe was particularly upset that producers didn't take the remark out of the West Coast feed.

IF this is true, that is what the Jackson family gets upset about? LOL!

I agree the remark was insensitive but the remark has been made for years. I don't really have any comment about the family's reaction.

Please note the Jackson family's complete statement below:

Michael Jackson's Family 'Shocked' by Pepsi Reference on 'American Idol'
They are hurt after a contestant references a 1984 incident in which the King of Pop's hair caught on fire during a commercial shoot.

The Jackson family are taking aim at Fox's American Idol after a contestant referenced the King of Pop's infamous 1984 Pepsi commercial during which his hair caught on fire.

On the show, contestant James Durbin told Ryan Seacrest: "I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around -- so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a 'Pepsi moment.'"

A Jackson family rep tells TMZ they "were shocked to see this. It's nothing to make light of and everybody should be focusing on who was responsible for Michael's death."

The spokesperson says Jackson patriarch Joe was particularly upset because producers didn't take the remark out of the West Coast feed.

An Idol spokesperson has yet to comment.

Well at least they want the focus on who killed Michael which TMZ didn't include in their write up.

I haven't been watching American Idol but that is a stupid thing to say. He probably wasn't thinking what he was saying.

Stupid thing to say by Durbin. This is the first time I've heard of him, but he made a cheap comment. ..

I watched the show last night and I didn't notice this comment being made (I'm on the East Coast). I must have nodded off.

Kanye has referenced that Pepsi accident on at least 2 of his songs. Michael never complained. WTF is wrong with this family?

They should worry about a pornographer & a stalker having full access to Michael's children.

1984 would be 27 years ago, almost a generation. I'm sorry but this is just a tempest in a teapot. I'd bet most of these contestants weren't even born then. To them, it is just something that happened a long time ago. I cannot believe the 'family' would bother to issue a statement over something like this and remain silent over more relevant and bigger issues.

Yes i do agree that what james durbin said was insentive and he sould have kept his mouth shut bout that. But the jackson really should focus on the trial

UPDATE:
James Durbin just tweeted, “For anyone talkin..I said pepsi NOT MJ! I have no disrespect for Michael. I grew up singing his art. I guess youll take it how you want it…” and then followed that up with, “Talkin about MJs passing is too soon. Making a reference to an incident 25 years ago..not too soon. The stab was at pepsi people.”

The fans must have been harassing him lol.... I don't think the entire family had a problem with it... if they even were watching. I could see why it would be a soft spot for MJ parents and kids though... But I doubt it is as big as tmz made it out to be.

^:mello:This statement is as pointless as the comment he made in AI in the first place! <_< Like seriously if he don't like Pepsi drink some Mountain Dew or something! lol

it was insensitve but ... they need to be just as forceful against "true" rudeness towards Michael..

I watched that episode, and frankly speaking I didn't think twice about this comment. I didn't took it as being insensitive or rude towards Michael. I took it as a dig at Pepsi. I mean the incident happened, Michael was a victim and it was Pepsi's fault because it was their set. So it was a "Pepsi moment".

Ok, Durbin wanted to be funny, but it was cheap shot, and he did look stupid. What bothered me was, after he said it, the respond from the audience: loud laugh, and Ryan laughed, too. He didn't say, "hey dude, not cool". Only Randy had dead look on his eyes.

Ok, I watched the clip again on youtube (because apparently this remark went right over my head or I fell asleep at this point). The kid didn't mean any harm. He was more making fun of all the product in his hair than MJ. It's pretty amazing though that something that happened 25 years ago is still so memorable.

I don't see anything wrong with the comment really to be honest. It wasn't supposed to be offensive at all. It wasn't any kind of 'shot' against MJ. I feel like Joe or whoever is pulling his strings just wants their name in the media...what a good opportunity with American Idol.

IMO there are more important things that they just ignore. And for example - this comment from TMZ is more deserving to complain about -
an injury that triggered an addiction to prescription drugs that may have ultimately taken his life.

Ahh, but Scream - this is the kind of reporting that they want. Oxman, in Mr Jackson's presence has called Michael an addict. So TMZ's article just solidifies their position. Sure it is the kind of thing that the Murray defense team would relish. But what the heck!

I agree the comment about the so called drug abuse stemming from the pepsi incident and linking it to mj's death is more troubling than some prat and a stupid comment.

Michael Jackson's Family Upset With James Durbin Over 'American Idol' Pepsi Quip

'We were shocked to see this,' read the Jacksons' message; Durbin tweeted an apology on Thursday.

Some people might argue that it's patently unfair to take rank amateurs, put them on the biggest show on TV and then expose them to potential worldwide ridicule every week. Because it's one thing to tune in to "American Idol" from your living room or play shows at the local wings joint, it's another thing entirely when you get up on that stage and open your mouth with tens of millions watching and listening.
James Durbin learned this lesson the hard way this week when he made what he thought was an innocent crack about not setting himself on fire during his pyro-tastic cover of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" on Wednesday night.
Asked by host Ryan Seacrest if he was worried about dancing around among the flames shooting up from the piano onstage, Durbin joked, "I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around — so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a 'Pepsi moment.' "
The seemingly innocent crack was a reference to the 1984 on-set accident in which late pop icon Michael Jackson was badly burned during the shooting of a Pepsi commercial by some wayward pyro effects. The serious burns he suffered in the incident allegedly led to his longtime addiction to pain medication and prescription drugs.
The Jackson family was not amused by the quip and sent a statement to TMZ on Thursday.
"We were shocked to see this. It's nothing to make light of and everybody should be focusing on who was responsible for Michael's death," read the statement. Family patriarch Joseph Jackson also was reportedly miffed that "Idol" producers did not cut the comment from the West Coast feed of the show.
Durbin defended his slip-up in a tweet, which has since been scrubbed from the singer's official "Idol" Twitter feed, that explained, "For anyone talkin ... I said pepsi NOT MJ! I have no disrespect for Michael. I grew up singing his art. I guess youll take it how you want it." He later added, "Talkin about MJs passing is too soon. Making a reference to an incident 25 years ago..not too soon. The stab was at pepsi people."
It's worth noting that Pepsi's bitter rival, Coca-Cola, is the main "Idol" sponsor, a fact that Seacrest reminded Durbin of in an awkward moment after the comment on the show.
What did you think of James Durbin's "Pepsi" quip? Tell us in the comments.
