Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary - Estate Announcement Page 66

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Michael's latter work gets high attention in the fan community because we discuss every aspect of Michael's life and career. The general public completely overlooks anything after Bad; rarely is Dangerous ever mentioned when discussing his music, and HIStory/Blood on the Dance Floor/Invincible may as well not exist.

But that's the same with any artist. Their entire catalog does not get same attention, there is always one-two albums in an aritsts catalog that is better known and more hyped by the general public than the rest.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I hope the commercials are in the doc too. I died laughing-the Suzuki people are quite shameless. All those cute little bootie/crotch shots. He is unbelievably adorable in these. Where were they filmed? LA?

It looks like LA to me, but I'm not sure. I apologize for the quality in this video:

I've never seen this photo before:

And what a great description! (From an MJ blog) Was it 1982? I thought it was earlier than that.

"Michael Jackson appeared in a series of Japanese commercials in 1982 for Suzuki’s CL50 Love scooter. Capitalizing on the popularity of his Off The Wall album, the company hired Michael for the promotional campaign of its smaller, fully automatic scooter, specifically targeting the female market. While Michael only dances around the scooter in the first spot, the second commercial shows him taking it for a short ride."

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Looks like about 1980 to me.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Yeah, he looks near enough like he did at the 1980 AMA's

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

ALL of those commercials MJ did better be in this doc!
I wish they put the Pepsi ads in Bad 25, but at least they did the California Raisons.

Great catch! That was a major endorsement that included a four part commercial (!) and it was not mentioned in the documentary. I do regret the tour was not discussed more at length. If it was, maybe Pepsi would have been mentioned.

Maybe instead of the contemporaries and commentators chosen, please chose someone who is a historian of sorts regarding Michael's career.

Thanks for posting that. A lot of it I hadn't seen!

How rare to see Michael driving!

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I just hope Spike Lee will get access to more MJ studio footage.

Would be awesome to have more footage of MJ actually recording all the legendary songs on OTW !

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I have never seen those videos before either is there a way that Spike lee or the Estate can see this thread because we as Michael Jackson fans know what we want to see more of.

That what i am hoping for too.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Remember "The Legend Continues?" This documentary was extremely well done as it focused on the professional accomplishments of Michael from J5 through the beginnings of the Bad Era. It was great promotion for the Bad album and his earlier works with J5 and solo works.

Michael's accomplishments are announced through voice-over (James Earl Jones' narration) and then commentators discuss those accomplishments/career milestones first and other items second, third, etc.

It is the same method most Beatles'/Elvis/others' documentaries use; particularly when the artist(s) is very accomplished as Michael was at a very young age. In this documentary, I believe he is 29/30. Michael was 20/21 when OTW was released and he was already a phenom.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Seeing as Spike was given all access to the reels from the BAD Era, if he's given the same blessing for 'Off The Wall' then maybe he could help the estate with concert releases? seems a long shot though, hopes aren't high to be quite honest.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

If this can happening that would be awesome.

That's what I've always figured.

I'm with BarBee0715 about those commercials! I'd love to see them in better quality!!

This is still my favourite presentation on Mike. Perfect timing- he had just taken over the world as was at his peak as a live performer (Heartbreak Hotel in Yokohama).

An updated version of this focusing mostly on his music is badly needed. Much like Bad 25, this (Off The Wall) will be another step towards it.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

^ yeah, used to have that in a VHS box set with 'Making of Thriller'

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

The Legend Continues was the best documentary released before June 2009, wasn't it?

Yeah, because it was solely about Micheal's talent and art and his rise to the top. with great interviews from Yoko, Sophia Loren, Marlon, Elizabeth and others. Some great clips and the first time I got to experience watching Michael perform live (on tv anyway) with Heartbreak Hotel.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

^Such a damn shame it wasn't an update to that documentary since Dangerous and HIStory were quite successful as well. Or other ones without creepy and sinister intentions behind them. It saddens me Michael had to die for people releasing valuable pieces praising him and acknowledging his enormous talent and priceless contributions to the music and entertainment.

I am SO DELIGHTED that you posted this doc. This is the special I was referring to earlier.

It's funny-I don't remember when I saw this the first time, because it was a Showtime special and I didn't get cable until 1995-but I do remember watching it and CBS owned Showtime as well as Epic, so maybe they ran it as a special back during the BAD tour.
Anyway, I do remember renting it and "The Making of Thriller" repeatedly until Blockbuster put their viewed VHS tapes on sale and I snatched them and "Motown 25" and still watch all 3 to this day on my old VCR.

I still think that this is one of the best documentaries of all time and all fans and non-fans should watch it today and all future docs should be based on it. Maybe it's because Suzanne dePasse produced it, or maybe because Michael was at the time at the absolute pinnacle of his greatness, but it's an excellent piece of work and really gives everyone an idea of exactly what Michael was all about-both personally, and professionally.

(And I know Spike has it, because he has parts of Quincy's interview from here in BAD 25).

It is a fantastic documentary, i bought the used VHS for 26p at a car boot sale.. it is a work of art, love the insight into his career and the rehearsal clips are so fascinating.. what i would give to see more of that, plus.. if i recall correctly didn't the voice over say ''You will see a performance of Dirty Diana from the 1988 BAD Tour?'' i'm sure i remember hearing something along those lines, haven't watched it in a while so don't blame me if i'm 100% off. I do hope OTW Docu will be as well done also, guess we shall see what plays out.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I haven't seen this in AGES. It's amazing.

I believe so. After 2009, I choose Bad25.

It saddens me Michael had to die for people releasing valuable pieces praising him and acknowledging his enormous talent and priceless contributions to the music and entertainment.

He did not. That documentary was from 1989 and Michael sold millions of albums and broke tour attendance records after 1989. There were always positive responses to Michael's art via commentary, articles, books, reviews, etc.

Indeed and yes, the commentators' views were much more valuable it in this documentary it seems. At that time, it placed Michael's talent beyond his contemporaries by showcasing the generation before him complimenting him. Not all commentary was useless in Bad 25, however; it would be more valuable to showcase Stevie Wonder comments as opposed to say, a Bruno Mars in my view.

Glad you and others enjoyed it. It is the best in my view.

I agree dePasse and Motown were the driving force behind this respectful, insightful, and entertaining documentary. Motown received profits from their artists however; there seemed to be a family atmosphere. I do not believe they could produce anything less than what they did for Michael here. It was a loving tribute that is far superior than other documentaries about Michael.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

That 6 seconds alone gave more insight to Michael as a composer than what the entire BAD 25 documentary did

I personally do not agree because Bad25 was an insightful and well made documentary however; I do enjoy the clip.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Does no body remember the documentary Michael Jackson: The Man, The Myth, The legend? It was similar to The Legend continues and even had footage from the same interviews and such, Haven't been able to find it anywhere at all, great footage though.

I just think that BAD25 could have gone into more detail with Michael as a songwriter.
