Thriller Fails To Qualify For Main Billboard Chart

Re: Sony furious over Jackson's chart snub

Ah come on! Sony should have checked it out before hand and not taken it for granted.. they should be pleased with its success.

Re: Sony furious over Jackson's chart snub

I'm really happy Sony are backing Michael in the USA like they did in the 1980's. See what a difference their is without Tommy Motolla.

well I'm glad that Sony is stepping up for it..

Thanks for the updates!

I agree, but I don't like how the press are already taking advantage to twist things by omitting from the latest articles, recent instances where Billboard conveniently altered their rules on behalf of other artists.

I'm glad that Sony is coming right back at them forcing them to publicly face & debate the 'ole double' standard on artist recognition. I think that the establishment of the industry was particularly frightened when MJ broke rank, reversed the snub by not attending ther 'celebration of their racist establishment,' (the grammy's).

We the:punk: people have a term called 'Being put on front street':

These industry minions thought they could quietly get away with yet another slight toward MJ, but didn't count on it performing so well with those who opinions really count...the public! In this case, we must also include the international public cause they made it #1 on Billboards own international charts.

The international success (home & abroad), of T25 draws has succeeded in making Billboards tactic a very public slight! I hope Sony continues not to back down from taking their rebuttal to the streets, that way the U.S. industry & media again can't hide from it's own racist track record.

In regard to the later, I hope their overall treatment of MJ blows up in their faces, as an international embarrassment.

The latest news in the world of Billboard's definitive sales and airplay charts.

Michael Jackson's "Thriller 25" is the highest-charting catalog album in the history of the comprehensive survey.

February 21, 2008,
Fred Bronson
KING OF POP (CATALOG): In its original run, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was on The Billboard 200 for 122 weeks, 37 of which were spent at No. 1.

With the re-entry of a silver anniversary edition, the rechristened "Thriller 25" (Legacy/Epic) is in its 112th week on the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart and is No. 1 on that tally for the first time.

"Thriller" debuted on The Billboard 200 the week of Dec. 25, 1982. The album made its first appearance on the catalog chart the week of Nov. 14, 1992, entering at No. 42. It didn't reach the top 10 until the week of Feb. 27, 1993, when it leapt 26-2. It remained No. 2 the following week but never equaled or surpassed that ranking until this week.

The re-entry of "Thriller" puts the classic album back on the catalog chart for the first time since the week of May 12, 2007.

There aren't many 49-year-old performers who can say they have been on the Billboard charts for almost 40 years, but Michael can. As a member of the Jackson 5, he made his chart debut the week of Nov. 15, 1969, when "I Want You Back" bowed on The Billboard Hot 100. That gives Michael a career chart span of 38 years, three months and two weeks.

A final note: on the Top Comprehensive Albums chart, where catalog titles mix with current best-sellers, "Thriller 25" debuts at No. 2, runner-up to Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" (Brushfire), which is also No. 1 on The Billboard 200. "Thriller 25" is the highest-charting catalog album in the history of the comprehensive survey.

Re: Thriller Fails To Qualify For Billboard Chart

maybe they SHOULD have known about that...

BUT, hell, them creating an uproar about it is pretty good pr. This way people knows it should've been number 2.

Re: Thriller Fails To Qualify For Billboard Chart

Well I'm glad to see that Sony is being so supportive of Michael.

Completely, agree with you both. It's good to see Sony getting on the horn on Michael's behalf. And I also agree that they probably didn't think this whole charting thing would be an issue as far as Thriller being any kind of competition for the hot 200. I wouldn't doubt if articles were already written about how "Thriller FAILED TO THRILL again"...same as many in the media had their stories already written for verdict day. PSYCHE!

Then again, this is nothing new. MTV tried to shut Michael out from their channel when they first started up and Rolling Stone magazine balked at making Michael a cover story back in 1983 becuz they didn't think he was worthy. Fast forward 6 months from Thriller's release and they were all chasing him down like flies to crap. History seems to be repeating itself....and we know how that story played out last time. ^_^

If I didn't know any better, I'd say Billboard is trying to clean things up with this latest article. Hmmmm..... Nice write-up but a link to it should be higher up and more visible on the main page. Good news all the way down the page is easily missed. :flowers: We know had this re-release tanked the news would have been front and center on the main page for DAYSSS!

Thanks to all for the articles and Congratulations to Michael! *confetti*

Re: Thriller Fails To Qualify For Billboard Chart

After thinking about it, I have to say Michael is getting screwed by Billboard here. While the 1st 9 tracks on T25 are oldies, the last 6 should be recognized as newer stuff.

Why is T25 being called an oldie album and can't be on the Top 200 when HIStory, which had greatest hits on it as well, debuted on the Top 200? I don't get it

Re: Thriller Fails To Qualify For Billboard Chart

I think one thing should be clear, SONY is standing up for itself. They want the chart status of Thriller, for their gain. In my opinion, any positive aspect for Michael is an after thought.

Re: Thriller Fails To Qualify For Billboard Chart

Sony making an uproar is simply another way to promote the album, lol...These articles about Sony being "upset" are doing nothing less than making even more people aware of the album, which is very smart...I'm sure SOMEBODY at Sony knew the album would end up on the catalog charts.

Oh Jesus... rules are rules! They have been in place long before T25 came along and they will be in place long after T25 is gone! A couple of remixes don't make a 25 year old album a new album! All of the whinning is making you and Sony look ridiculous! Be glad that chart positions are that good and get over it! It's #1 on Top pop catalag on #2 on Comprehensive album charts... which basically seems to be a combination of both.... so that's great!

HIStory is a different story, as any greatest hits album is allowed on the Top 200! Those are Billboards rules! You'll just have to accept them!

And again, if T25 is a new album than it's sales won't be counted towards the original Thriller, as it is not the same album anymore.... and nobody would want that! You can't have it both ways!

there have been other re-issues from other artists with over 10 bonus tracks.. that charted on the catalog charts.. and no complaints were made.. typical megalomania Michael style wanting Billboard to bend the rules.

if Sony and Michael wanted a proper #1 he should have pulled his finger out and released a new record.

not tweaked a few knobs on those lame mixes..

The rule is a stupid rule. MJ sold almost as much as the no 1 and he should have been represented in the charts as the no 2 selling album, which it s. Not relegated to some catalogue that nobody cares about. MJ was no2. The rest of the world recognise that and so should America. If the rule is stupid it can be changed.:)

Michael Jackson's Label Complains About Billboard Chart Placing Of Thriller 25

Michael Jackson's Label Complains About Billboard Chart Placing Of Thriller 25
Friday February 22, 2008

If you look solely at sales of all albums, this week Michael Jackson's special edition Thriller 25 would be lodged at #2 based on strong sales of 166,000 copies. However, a quick look at the Billboard Top 200 album chart shows Grammy-winning Amy Winehouse and her album Back to Black sitting comfortably at #2 with Michael Jackson nowhere to be seen.

The reason for this exclusion of Thriller 25 is that Billboard considers the album a catalog or oldies album, and Billboard publishes a special chart just for catalog albums. If you look at that chart, Michael Jackson is at #1 with the biggest one-week sales of a catalog album in over 10 years. Jackson's label Sony is complaining about the placement reasoning that the Top 200 chart is much more visible and likely to impact sales, but Billboard holds firm by their decision indicating they also spoke to major retailers such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy in making their decision. Sony also claims that it should be considered a new album because of the inclusion of new versions of songs featuring Akon and Fergie among others. However, past precedent shows that other albums including even more new material have been kept to the catalog chart.

Despite the controversy, it is quite an achievement for any 25 year old album to sell over 100,000 copies in one week.

AW: Thriller Fails To Qualify For Billboard Chart

Don't know if this already has been posted, so there you go:

Week Ending Feb. 24, 2008: The Case Of The Missing #2 Album

Posted Wed. Feb 27, 4:52 PM ET by Paul Grein in Chart Watch

For the second week in a row, Jack Johnson's Sleep Through The Static and Michael Jackson's Thriller 25 are the top two albums in the U.S. Or are they?

They are, if you look at the Top Comprehensive Albums chart compiled by Nielsen/SoundScan. Johnson is #1 for the week with sales of 105,000 copies, trailed by Jackson with 63,000 copies. (The gap between the two is wider than it was last week, when just 14,000 copies separated them.)

But Jackson is nowhere to be found on the list of Top Current Albums that is published each week (as The Billboard 200) in Billboard magazine. The top 10 from that chart is reprinted in countless newspapers and websites around the world, including this one. The reason for the omission, as I explained last week, is that Nielsen/SoundScan and Billboard exclude catalog titles-defined as albums that are 18 months old or older-from the main chart. (Continuously running "current" hits are exempted.)

The idea is to make more room on the chart for new albums, which need every break they can get. This week, the rule resulted in 31 older albums being removed from Top Current Albums and shifted over to Top Catalog Albums. Just four of these 31 titles would have ranked in the top 100: Thriller 25, which would have ranked #2; Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' Greatest Hits, #63; Guns N' Roses' Greatest Hits, #64, and Bob Marley & the Wailers' Legend, #84.

The idea of clearing catalog product out to give new titles a break makes a certain amount of sense. But having a top 10 that forever has to carry an asterisk is a high price to pay. Billboard and Nielsen/SoundScan should consider revising their policy so that the top 10, at least, is presented without any modification. They could even present the top 100 exactly as is. This week, as noted, they're opening up only four spots in the top 100 by having this policy. Most of the catalog titles--including such perennial best-sellers as Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon, AC/DC's Back In Black and Metallica's Metallica--rank in the second hundred.

In his Over The Counter column, Billboard's Geoff Mayfield reports that Thriller 25 is only the second album to be denied a top 10 spot on Top Current Albums by the catalog-exclusion rule since the Comprehensive chart bowed in late 2003. Il Divo's The Christmas Collection would have placed #10 on the main chart in December 2006 if it had been allowed to compete. Even so, two albums denied a hard-earned spot in the top 10 is two too many.

I know that Michael Jackson, a proud and highly competitive man, is never content to finish second. But he should bear in mind that his album, which won the Grammy for Album of the Year 24 years ago, sold more copies in each of the last two weeks than this year's freshly-minted Album of the Year champ, Herbie Hancock's River: The Joni Letters. River ranked #5 last week and this week dives to #16.

....

Janet Jackson hit #1 with five consecutive studio albums from Control in 1986 through All For You in 2001. But she peaked at #2 with her last two releases, Damita Jo and 20 Y.O. Next week we'll see if she can return to her old chart-topping ways with her new album Discipline. Also due next week: Dolly Parton's Backwoods Barbie, Erykah Badu's New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War and Goldfrapp's Seventh Tree.

This will be a memorable week for Johnson, who also makes the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time. Johnson was born in 1975, when Jackson was roughly at the midpoint between his initial Jackson 5 smashes and his solo superstardom with Off The Wall.

On Hot Digital Tracks, "Low" by Flo Rida featuring T-Pain holds at #1 for a record 13th consecutive week. It is now just 129,000 copies behind "Crank That Soulja Boy" as the most downloaded track of all time. It will probably take two more weeks to top it. The Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em track just keeps adding to its total. It sold 30,000 downloads this week.

Here are this weeks other Billboard charts for MJ
Billboard charts are Thriller is no. 1 and No 1s is at no 7 on billboard cat. chart
http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/charts/chart_display.jsp?g=Albums&f=Top+Pop+Catalog

Thriller is also at no. 4 on Billboards top Internet albums

I am going to move this to T25. I have also changed the title.

:p
yeah thats because his singing is SO BAD that no one understands what he is saying:mad:

well at times i find it really difficult to understand what MJ is saying not cuz he cant sing its just that his style/pronunciations of words are so different. y'all know what i mean :)

Re: Why the billboard main chart isn't showing Thriller

I think Michael is actually getting more pr with this mess.. They remember to state every week he is NOT there, but still sells well.

Re: Why the billboard main chart isn't showing Thriller

IMO; I DO NOT think 166,000 copies are strong sales considering there was different editions available and the 'same fans' were just buying 'different versions'. If fans bought more than 1 edition that means there was not 166,000 'individual fans' that purchased. If each fan purchased at 'least' two different versions that means half of 166,000 is only 83,000 'individual fans' that purchased.

It's a 25 year old album that has been re-issued numerous times, yet it still went to #2 in the U.S and was in the top 3 all over the rest of the world. What else do you want?
