Supermodel Remembers Michael From Her Childhood

(20-05-08) In a recent interview with the New Zealand Herald, Sudanese supermodel Alek Wek spoke of her fond memories of Michael Jackson:

Michael Jackson really is the king of pop. When my friends talk about childhood, I've never heard of any cartoons or TV they remember. The only thing we share is Michael Jackson. That's how far his music travelled - to a remote village on the other side of the world. When the militias came to Wau (Sudan), they would blast out 'Thriller' as they moved down the dirt streets."

Alek is best recognized for her work with prestigious fashion designers John Galliano, Donna Karen and Calvin Klein. She was also featured in the video for Janet Jackson's "Got 'Til It's Gone" in 1997.

something i can also abide by in some of the most outrageously remote places in war-torn Iraq throughout the 90s.

*in awe*

thanks for this.

This is a really cool Michael Jackson mention- it was actually published last year (in a different publication). I think Alek Wek has a book coming out.

When I was at university, I remember reading in a book about the global spread of the English language an anecdote about the author being in a remote village where no one spoke English, it was quite underdeveloped, but the kids were dancing to Michael Jackson in the street :D

thanx you very much for posting
i enoyted reading this article.
alex wek has always been beautiful ,a fav model of mine .

it is cool about Michael being played in remote places around the world :) but she is the one who stands out to me in this story, look where she came from, and where she is now... awe struck

that's fu.cking awesome. Shows how big Michael really is.

Nice little story, it is truly amazing how far Michael's music goes to remote places in the world...no one and I mean NO ONE can pride themselves of that.

Joe Jackson wrote in his book about going to the outback and meeting the aboriginese who had come out to see the J5.

Extract from Joe Jacksons book on his visit to australia'

In a couple of days I have received an invitation from the aboriginals to visit for me and Jackson 5. I was curious, and I have told about it to several people in hotel, but they did not advise me to accept the invitation. It would be too dangerous to children and Rose, the white teacher whom has employed Motown. Nonsense, I have thought and have gone to the aboriginals.
We have gone in to the bushes together with all accompanying personnel, about 20 people, and I have to say, it was wonderful event.
Aboriginals have surrounded us, touched us and hugged us. They have brought us exotic fruit and have treated us with meat which they have fried in the earthen furnace. I seldom managed to try something more refined. All of us got sad when there came the time to say goodbye. I anyway had the time to ask them, from where did they found out about Jackson 5. With loghter they said: Jacksons are very famous here in the bush, we knew that you'll cme here long before you arrived here."

OMG! The bolded is...kinda bizarre lol!

But yeah...great story thanks for this! I've seen interviews with Alek Wek and she REALLY is a beautiful person. She's so soft spoken and kind.

The most remote village in the world knows about Michael Jackson. Now that's powerful! I love that his music reaches the entire world. That's amazing.
