Czechs oppose plans for Michael Jackson statue

(AP) – 4 hours ago

PRAGUE — Thousands of Czechs are protesting plans to place a Michael Jackson statue in Prague.

A group of fans plans to erect a 6-foot column with a bronze bust of the King of Pop in Letna Park, where Jackson held a concert in 1996. They want to unveil it Aug. 29 to mark Jackson's 52nd birthday.

City authorities have approved the project.

By Tuesday, more than 2,000 people had joined a Facebook protest claiming it makes no sense to put the statue in the park because Jackson had no connection with the Czech Republic.

A Prague art gallery has proposed putting statue by a Czech contemporary artist there instead.

whats this thing with statues..can't people show love a million other ways? this isn't ancient times where you needed a statue to show someones looks. lol im sorry but all i keep hearing is statue this or statue that...its great.... but its not the only way to show michael...maybe build a place to help the less furtunate in his name or something else. michael would appreciate that...something with actual meaning and not only idol worship.

No but he did probably stage the greatest concert of popular music that country has ever seen, and thats not even worth a little statue in a park?, people need to stop being so pathetic

THEIR loss. Tons of Michael Jackson statues will be built and tons of tributes will be held.

don't at least one or more of those fans have a connection to the Czech Republic?

....we are the world...

I do too. I think that would be so awesome.

While I agree that there are other ways to honor him besides a statue, I still think it's a nice gesture.

Edit........

Sorry everybody!!!!!

First of all it has already been approved by city authorities. Just because there are 2,000 ppl opposing it doesn't mean it won't happen. I'm sure there were a lot more than 2,000 fans that were involved in making this happen and there must have been huge support for it if the city authorities approved it. Remember this report is from the media who can be very misleading as we all know. Why hasn't the press reported on the other side of the story?

It's a statue! I'm not seeing how it will hurt them... Now if they said everyone there was required to have one in their front yard, I could understand them complaining about it.

As its been mentioned already a 2,000 person opposition to an order that has already been granted doesn't mean that the statue will not go up.

Anyone can start a Facebook group. Most Czechs would be happy for this statue and I cant wait to see it x

you're probably right. i'm beginning to think that facebook group was started by the associated press. wouldn't be surprised, if it was.

Don't know anything about the Czech way of life, tax wise. If this were being paid for out of taxes paid by the Czech people, then I could see a potential problem, ie, money more needed for other welfare/humanitarian projects. But if it's being strictly paid for by donations for the scupture, not sure what the problem is. If it's being placed in a public place with the public's tax money, then I could see a cause to question it. jmo.

the city authorities seem to see the relevance and significance of it being done. perhaps all that is needed is a clear cut explanation regarding funding etc. the public tends to be reactionary..

No one visits that country and now I'm one more those people.

What an ignorant comment.

So the UK and Brits are sh*t because they have The Sun newspaper? The USA because they have Fox TV?

Just because some non-Michael Jackson fans oppose this plan and set up a Facebook group does not mean it won't go ahead. And is certainly should not be a judgement on the Czech Republic or its people.

Get a life!

the only thing I have to say is way to go Czech fans!! I hope you will succeed! You are very lucky that your city's authorities approved this project. It's a lot and it's much much more than can be said about lots of other countries, whose authorities dont' even care.

The way to combat this is to create another Czech facebook group supporting the plan and gain more supporters than they have. ensure the government and media is aware of it, and then this'll all blow over.

On the new facebook group you could include the other MJ monuments and statues around the world - Gary (Indiana), Rio, Amsterdam etc. (are there more?)
