Ilan welcomes a little friendly competition, but asks the fans to remember the meaning behind his projects. Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 31, 2011

A friendly, yet fierce, competition has sprung up between the fans of the “Lady” and the fans of the “King.” It all started when artist David Ilan, who is behind the largest Michael Jackson tribute in the world, agreed to create an image of Lady Gaga if enough of her fans participate in the one-of-a-kind project – an interactive work of art.

Ilan sees it differently. “The tribute portraits are completely separate and are not meant to compete with each other,” he said. “Both projects need a million participates in order to be completed, so I guess that sparked the competition to see which project can get a million fans first.”

Ilan is known around the world for his unique “dot drawings” that allow ordinary people to play a role in their creation. His art pieces are made from hand-drawn dots; each dot represents a real person. People participate for free by requesting a dot, and when enough dots come together, an amazing image is formed.

Lady Gaga fans who have seen The Michael Jackson Tribute Portrait (which currently has greater than 270,000 participants in more than 180 countries) asked Ilan to create a dot drawing for Lady Gaga. Ilan responded by saying he would agree to do the drawing if 250,000 Gaga fans register for their dots. With those words, the unintended competition was started.

Even though Ilan sees both projects as completely separate, fans have taken to the Internet and other means to spread the word. To them, the projects represent a battle between the fans.

Jenny Morrison, who was one of the first to sign up at http://www.GagaDots.com, said, “Lady Gaga fans are all about fun. This is a celebration of the greatest recording artist of today. I promise we will get the millionth dot before Michael’s millionth.”

Sharon Salazar calls herself Michael Jackson’s biggest fan and signed up at http://www.MichaelJacksonTributePortrait.com. She says, “Lady Gaga deserves to come in a close second. Bring it on!”

Ilan welcomes a little friendly competition, but asks the fans to remember the meaning behind his projects.

“The Michael Jackson Tribute Portrait promotes Michael’s legacy and humanitarianism,” he said. “I also see the Lady Gaga project promoting causes that are dear to her. Both projects are unique and important and, with the fans’ help, can do a lot of good in the world.”

He added, “Once the competition is over and we reach our goals of a million fans in each tribute portrait, I hope we all focus on the true meaning of the projects – bringing good people together and making great things happen in the names of Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga.”

What do you think?

Just became a DOT!!! I'm dot #271662. I urge all MJ fans to sign up to reach the 1 million mark.

Thanks Simply Magic for sharing this information.

There, done!

I just freaking hate Lady Gaga! I'm seriously surprised she didn't fade out of the music industry yet (if you can call it the music industry considering the shitty music people listen to these days).

I am very tired if this lady gaga nonsense. Sick of her fans trying to compete and beat michael. I don't think she deserves it and tbh i'm annoyed that the artist didn't wait until michael's portrait was finished. I don't think it's respectful to mj for him to be encouraging this competition.

Lets keep is civil guys. But I'm not sure what having a Lady Gaga portrait is meant to accomplish here. The Michael one was bringing everyone together out of love, the Gaga one just seems to be a one up over Michael fans.

Can't the Gaga fans find their own tribute project like an image of her made of meat or something? And why does there need to be a tribute to her so soon? Last I checked she was still living.

Edit: I've had my MJ dot for quite some time.

I like Gaga, Michael is my life, and I don't see what the big hoo-ha is about. All those stars supposedly "competing" with Michael in anything is very forced. The people behind the "competitions" as well as the opposing artists themselves know that no one can ever truly compete with Michael.

Lady Gaga ain't nothing but, a Cyndi Lauper of "Girls just want to have fun" fame all over again! That's who she reminds me of! Just more over the top, nothing new though!

I don't see why she needs that kind of tribute? Already...Really? MJ tribute is meaningful and to compete with a man who no longer lives because her fans demand it is embarrassing and desperate on their part!

I like her and her music but, the over rating is ruing it big time! The artist doing MJ portrait should had declined but, oh well! At least do it after MJ's was done and or at least don't call the Lady one a competition with MJ makes no sense, I find that so lame! SMH

Anyway, I been had my MJ Dot too!

Ok, I got my dot back in the days. I am dot 2187 :)

Anyway, Michael Jackson is big enough to fight for himself. I really believe there is no reason to bash any other artist, nor his/her fans, to make the point that Michael is the best for us. He is the best for us for sure!! But if that is not the case for others, who cares? I like Gaga music, but I also agree this is really Cindy Lauper + Grace Jones :) But that's her and if we don't like her, that's fine.

I got my dot a long time ago. I thought the MJ portrait was special since it has other celebs and the children's dots in it. Well guys, get your friends together and add some dots for Michael.

I thought MJ's dot portrait was done already...hasn't this been going on for a while?

Yes it has been going on for a while, but has not reached the mark. More people need to know about it. It seems mainly the fans from forums are aware of it and you know there are much more fans than that.

I won't be a "dot" of anyone who uses Michael's name to spread their own fame. If you're an artist, come just do it and we'll applaud you, why would you need my membership info to make a portrait?

I got my dot long time ago.
What on earth is this, battle of the MJJ fans vs LG fans?
Michael is gone, Gaga is alive, her fans can see her in awards show, jamming on her concerts, seeing her alive, VIP meetings, autographs, live speeches. What are we left with? Pain and still coping with fact that he is gone and manslaughter case. Now they are throwing this to our face?
It is so degrading.

But who is Gaga comparing to Michael? Michael who has given over 40 years of music to the whole wide world with some one who just got her biggest breakthrough, what 2-3 years ago is plain wrong and outrages, offensive on so many levels.

It is annoying when they (media, general public) try to compare Michael with every artist out there when it is obvious the man proved himself- LONG TIME AGO. They did it when he was alive constantly, and they are doing it now. What is takes for them to get it once and for all: Michael Jackson is the King of Pop, and KING OF SANI (he was crowned in Africa for real).

Michael's achievements aren't only measured on music/dance scale or countless awards, an innovator, a record broker, a Guinness Award recipient, but also the imprints he has left in our hearts and our lives. To add to the list countless humanitarian and charity works he has done since he was a kid. No comparison, there is no one, but one, and his name is Michael Jackson.

Also who ever is organizing this stupid face off game, needs to know that Michael Jackson has fans from around the world, including 3rd world. Not necessarily internet is accessible to all of them, some of them do not have internet or access to it. It is unfair.

My message to LG fans: hash little fans, to early you are proclaiming her a greatest artist, she is good, but she has a long road ahead of her. She needs to accomplish over 40 years of successful career of making music at least, and she just started.

Her fans can get her all the dots, but Michael has all the stars....and the crown, even the real one...

The 24-year-old singer, Lady Gaga is in tie with the perfume company, Coty which is specializing in her new perfume which is set to release soon. The best thing about Lady Gaga's Perfume is that she wants the smell to be only of bodily fluids. :bugeyed

The singer who has called the perfume, 'Monster', is said to have the smell combination of blood, sweat and somat else.:)
anyway ..back on topic.
