Salles don't matter when it comes to music recognition. What matters is whether people recognize their contribution in music because music is what stays.Sales do not indicate how important is one artist.I mean look who are the top sellers these days. Reality show albums or whatever they are called. Yes, Madonna is surelly recognized in that area.Lot's of young artist cite her as their influence and you can see that she has influenced a lot. That's not the case with Mike,unfortunatelly.
Anyway.Since we are talking about Madonna i have to say that i really admired her speach after Mike's passing. I was watching it the other day and i must say that it was very moving.I read someone's comment here that said that MJ fans were pissed at her about that speach.I don't know if that's true but if it is, then it's too bad. Her speach was one of the best things that someone did in Mike's memory. Words full of respect, truths that no one had the b@lls to say or admit and most important no stupid jokes or imitations.Beautiful, beautiful speach.Apparently only she could handle it and she nail it. Much respect for that.
I agree that the sales isn't the same kind of recognition. Yes, it shows that artists like MJ and Madonna are immensely popular and while it does recognize talent in some way, it's not the same as having artistry respect.
However, I disagree that Madonna is more recognized for her music and influence on other artists more so than MJ. That's not true at all. MJ's stamp is all over modern music. From not so noticable influences, down to complete copycats (Usher, etc). I really don't see how that could be denied. MJ has lots of industry respect.
Madonna has certainly influenced the current generation of females, but nowhere close to the impact of the one and only Michael Jackson. I don't believe for a second that Madonna has ever truly been recognized for more than her pop culture influences. The music gets overlooked. Her artistry is overlooked. Used to, that was because the controversy overshadowed the work, but the past decade or so she mellowed out and the music shined. Even so, few want to give her credit for that. I don't believe she'll get the recognition she deserves until she is dead and gone. It's one of those "Don't know what ya got til it's gone" situations.
And yes, Madonna was flogged here for her speech. There's no debate about that. I was there. They said stuff like that "she made it all about her" and "it was just a publicity stunt". Never mind the fact that the family gave their approval for her to deliver such a speech. They clearly wanted someone who could represent the era and express the true loss. No one was close to being as big a star as MJ but Madonna. The two went hand in hand as far as pop stars and the media goes. And no, they aren't anything alike musically or artistically, but still... no one could have made a more powerful statement than Madonna.
It's a shame many refuse to give Madonna credit but that's often the case. I guess I've simply grown accustom to it over the years. Her motives are always questioned. She can't adopt a baby, raise a family, or help out an impoverished nation without it being controversial. Madonna has been controversial from day one. Her style caused a stir and once nude photos were found (her early modeling days) it was one controversy after the next. Many say that Madonna purposely created controversies (which she did) but I believe she was a magnet and it followed her irregardless. Somewhat reminiscent of the way MJ created controversy without even trying.
