Fulham Football club to get statue of MJ

Al Fayed, who was a close friend of Jackson, commissioned a statue in memory of the pop icon following his death in 2009.

The Fulham chief originally planned to erect it outside his Harrods store, but following the sale of the Knightsbridge landmark, he decided it should be situated at Craven Cottage.

The statue, depicting Jackson in one of his most iconic poses, will stand on the banks of the River Thames, adjacent to the stadium's Riverside and Hammersmith stands.

The statue will be unveiled on Sunday 3rd April before the Cottagers' home game against Blackpool.

Jackson did visit Craven Cottage as a guest of Al Fayed, who told his club's official website: "Michael Jackson was truly a legend, a term used too often in this modern world saturated in the hyperbole surrounding celebrity.

"He was my friend, a man with whom I shared many happy memories and who died a tragic and untimely death.

"He left behind a legacy of music so vast it takes one's breath away; from a precocious talent to an ingenuity and groundbreaking modernity that shall never be repeated.

"It shall often be imitated, but it will never be replicated.

"Michael Jackson was, and shall always remain, one of a kind.

"I hope that many fans of his will visit the statue at the Cottage from far and wide, and that Fulham fans will appreciate seeing the finest performer in the world in and amongst them, the finest fans in the world."

wow even athletes honoring mike! this is good news, who's next politicians?

This is nice to hear although I was disapointed by the reaction to it of some people. I think its a lovely gesture.

football supporters near a statue of mj. not a good idea

better off putting it in some entrance in a banqueting suite or something similar

not being sterotpyical or anything lol but think of thick ignorant idots who read tabloids ontop of the thug racist hoolligan element that follow football teams.

Stupid idea by Al Fayed to put the statue outside Craven Cottage. While the majority of fans who follow 99.9% of football clubs are decent people, there's is an element of idiots in every support.

Add to that the fact that the British tabloid rags like The Sun and Mirror ran every strange and slanderous story about Michael, you'll have a large element of people who don't want a statue of "that weirdo" at "their club".

It will be defaced, at some point by some idiots, guaranteed.

"that weirdo"
and thats being mild.anyone who lives near by have an idea of where it will actually be. nice to see its been unveliled on paris birthday. not that it would happen but would have been nice to see her unveil it

Sky Sports News had the article posted on their website, however they used the J word in their title. I sent them an email telling them what I thought about that
Now we'll have to wait and see if they will act professionally and change the title and issue an apology.

True, but it seems an odd place to put it. Not that I'm against it, I think it's fantastic!

Your forgetting that Football now is very much policed and monitored
Anyone caught defacing the statue would face criminal charges i'm sure
yeah and how they would love the attention

I follow football,we do not ALL behave like that.Every walk of life has good and bad elements.

hence why i used the word sterotypical. im a supervisor at elland road i know exactly what football supporters are like. good and bad!

Think alot of people are reading far too much into it, tbh
mayve. its just u dont want to give any hater the opp in the first place

Regardless of how some may or may not recieve it
It is a lovely, beautiful gesture from one friend to another.
I think its very exciting he will do this to honour his friend Michael.

Think its a nice idea but I too am a bit baffled as to why he would choose such an area to place it. I really do see some negative opposition to this move coming.

If Al Fayed is interested he can contact Katherine Via Mann and he will arrange for everything .

If all of ya are on about hooliganism, it hasn't been around badly for about 20 years, the worse part of Football Hooliganism was during the Madchester period.

I'm sure the statue shall be fine, and a wonderful gesture :).

I can see it getting vandalized, covered in you know what. You know what people are like. :(

Nice gesture though.
