The Best Things In Life May Be Free, But It Cost $400 Million To Get The Beatles On iTunes
The best things in life are free
But you can keep them for the birds and bees
Now give me money
That’s what I want
That’s what I want, yeah
That’s what I want… Paul McCartney has signed a $400 million deal with Apple for the distribution of the entire Beatles’ back catalog on iTunes. Under the deal, the money will be distributed to Ringo Starr, the families of George Harrison and John Lennon, Michael Jackson, EMI and Sony, along with McCartney getting his share as well.
The deal finally finishes Steve Job’s quest for the Holy Grail of music downloads.

I recently asked Nick Cave what it was like to be Nick Cave, and he told me this: "I kind of know that as soon as I enter a room things are going to change for everybody." He wasn't being immodest - just honest. And then the Aussie rocker put his celebrity effect into some sort of perspective. "For some, it's more intense than others," he said. "Take Michael Jackson: When he walks into a room, everything - the entire trajectory of people's lives - changes. Now, I ain't Michael Jackson. But there is an element of that." Cave may not be Michael Jackson, but the only postwar entertainers who could legitimately claim to equal Jackson's celebrity effect - Sinatra, Presley - are dead. Of pop's living deities, probably only a handful come close, among them Michael's younger sister, Janet.

Honoring Philly’s Finest: Gamble and Huff
[10 March 2008]
by Claudrena N. Harold
Complementing each other beautifully, Huff and Gamble created magical moments, as well as inspired many artists coming in and out of their studios. One of their greatest admirers was pop megastar Michael Jackson, who worked with the production team after he and his brothers departed Motown in 1975.
Convinced the new addition to their musical family could dominate the pop, soul, and dance charts, Epic assigned the Jacksons’ production to Gamble and Huff. No one was more excited about this arrangement than brother Michael: “We’d always had great respect for the records that Gamble and Huff had overseen, records like “Back Stabbers” by the O’Jays, “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”, by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes (featuring Teddy Pendergrass), and “When Will I See You Again”, by the Three Degrees, along with many other hits.” Very attentive to Gamble and Huff’s creative process, Jackson learned a great deal about songwriting from the two men. “Just watching Huff play the piano while Gamble sang,” the superstar later recalled in his autobiography, “taught me more about the anatomy of a song than anything else. Kenny Gamble is a master melody man. He made me pay closer attention to the melody because of watching him create.”
To Michael Jackson and many others, Gamble and Huff elevated pop and soul to a level of unprecedented sophistication. Love for the architects of Philly soul, however, was not universal.

By MIKE BAILEY, Columbian staff writer
“My first instrument was a bass trombone, but that was back in preschool,” she said. “I tried the piano and that didn’t cut it. But then I heard the bass lines in Michael Jackson’s ‘Dangerous,’ that’s when I became interested in the bass.”

ASCAP to Honor Steve Miller and Lionel Richie at 25th Annual Pop Music Awards on April 9 in Los Angeles
Lionel Richie, a native of Tuskegee, Alabama, joined a rhythm & blues band called the Commodores as a saxophonist. During the late 1970s and early 80s, Richie's original songs would bring the Commodores success after success on both the Pop and R&B charts with such hits as "Easy," "Still," "Three Times a Lady" and "Sail On." After writing and recording (as a duet with Diana Ross) the Oscar-nominated "Endless Love" movie theme, Richie embarked on a monumental solo career that brought him four Grammy Awards and a Best Song Academy Award (for "Say You, Say Me" from the film, "White Nights"). His best-selling albums, "Lionel Richie," "Can't Slow Down" and "Dancing on the Ceiling" were filled with chart-topping hits written by Richie, including "You Are," "Truly," "All Night Long (All Night)," "Hello," "Penny Lover," "Running with the Night," "Dancing on the Ceiling" and "Ballerina Girl." Richie also co-wrote, with Michael Jackson, the USA for Africa anthem, "We Are the World." Richie is a three-time ASCAP Pop Songwriter of the Year honoree. He earned the coveted prize at the very first Pop Music Awards in 1984, and again in 1985 and 1986.

Michael Jackson HIStory:
1988 - Michael Jackson said "I would like to say this about the United Negro College Fund. An education opens a person's mind to the entire world, and there is nothing more important than to make sure everyone has the opportunity for an education. To want to learn, to have the capacity to learn and not to be able is a tragedy. I am honored to be associated with an evening that says this will never happen."
2004 - It was reported in Santa Barbara, CA, that the Michael Jackson molestation case was possibly on a Grand Jury docket.
2005 - Michael Jackson arrived late for court in his child molestation trial due to a back injury. The judge threatened to put Jackson in jail. Jackson arrived in pajama bottoms and slippers.
