Fulham Football club to get statue of MJ

I've not read this entire thread so apologies if I'm repeating anything that's already been said, but it doesn't exactly strike me as respectful to Fulham's fans to erect a statue of Michael in a place that could have been devoted to one of a legendary former player, no matter how great the friendship.

Hilariously tacky.

I'm struggling to place the MJ this statue is supposed to be based on... His skin colour suggests around the mid-eighties, his face and hair look Bad-to-Dangerousish and that outfit looks like one I think he wore in 2001/2002? So it's a fictitious design, then?

I think it may of been more fitting to have named a stand there "The Michael Jackson Stand" in honour of the day he went and sat there, rather than a statue which risks being damaged along with Michael's name.

anyone here...what's the statue made of ??

.....i like the body but the structure of the face not really no. :(

...this is not going well.

Here's the response of Al Fayed to the detractors:

Mohamed Al Fayed tells critics of Michael Jackson statue to 'go to hell'

A statue of Michael Jackson has been unveiled at Fulham FC's Craven Cottage stadium - and fans of the football club can "go to hell" if they don't appreciate it.

This is according to the club's chairman Mohamed Al Fayed, who revealed the monument before the team's Premier League clash with Blackpool this afternoon (April 3).

After fans had earlier criticised the decision to erect a statue of Jackson, claiming it would make the club a laughing stock, Al Fayed defended the move.

"Why is it bizarre? Football fans love it. If some stupid fans don't understand and appreciate such a gift they can go to hell", he told BBC News, which has published a picture of the statue.

Al Fayed, a close personal friend of the late King Of Pop, went on to suggest that fans unhappy with the statue could defect to Fulham's Premier League neighbours Chelsea.

"People will queue to come and visit it from all over the UK and it is something that I and everybody else should be proud of," Al Fayed added.

Jackson visited Craven Cottage in 1999 to see Fulham overcome Wigan Athletic 2-0.

I REALLY APPRECIATE IT BUT HONESTLY ITS IN THE WRONG PLACE IMO....

Michael Statue now up

Al Fayed, a close friend of the late performer, caused controversy after announcing he had decided to place the tribute to Jackson outside the Cottagers' stadium.
The statue was commissioned following Jackson's death in June 2009 and was due to be erected at Harrods before Al Fayed sold the Knightsbridge store.
"Why is it bizarre?," Al Fayed said after the unveiling. "Football fans love it. If some stupid fans don't understand and appreciate such a gift they can go to hell."
He added: "I don't want them to be fans. If they don't understand and don't believe in things I believe in they can go to Chelsea, they can go to anywhere else.
"People will queue to come and visit it from all over the UK and it is something that I and everybody else should be proud of."
Kit Symons played during Jackson's appearance against Wigan in 1999 and is now U18s manager at the Cottagers.
"It is great," he said. "The big thing is it is obviously something that the chairman feels very, very passionately about and he has decided to erect this statue and fair dos to him."
Speaking on the time of Jackson's visit, he added: "It was just happy times. They were great times back then.
"The chairman obviously used to bring high-profile people down to the games.
"Tony Curtis was here a few weeks after and it was just fantastic times."

Re: Michael Statue now up

Lovely statue, but those comments on that page are so ignorant. It's just upsetting knowing that many will always remain blind to who Michael really was.

MAF - Dont like Michael? Go to hell!

Mr Al Fayed unveiled the tribute to his late friend ahead of Fulham's Premier League match against Blackpool on Sunday. He had wanted to put the statue outside London's Harrods store, which he previously owned, but could not get permission.

So Mr Al Fayed decided to erect the memoria near the football club's ground in the city's near the football club's ground in the city's southwest - to much consternation from Fulham fans. But the chairman dismissed criticism of the statue as "stupid".

"Football fans love it. If some stupid fans don't understand and appreciate such a gift they can understand and appreciate such a gift they can go to hell," he said."I don't want them to be fans. If they don't understand and don't believe in things I believe in they can go to Chelsea, they can go believe in they can go to Chelsea, they can go to anywhere else"People will queue to come and visit it from al over the UK and it is something that I and everybody else should be proud of."

Mr Al Fayed invited Jackson to watch a Fulham match in 1999.
