Billboard Music Awards Producer Larry Klein on Show's Michael Jackson Event: ‘It’s Amazing’

“It's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen,” says Larry Klein, the executive producer for the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. Klein is referring to the Michael Jackson event slated for this year's show timed with the release of Jackson's new posthumous album “Xscape” (out last Tuesday, May 13 on Epic). Though details of the exerience have yet to be fully revealed, Klein's endorsement means more than most.
Over the course of his 40-year-plus career at Dick Clark Productions, Klein has seen performances by everyone from Prince to Madonna to Paul McCartney to, well, Michael Jackson AND Paul McCartney . . . together. “I was working late one night and got a call to go over to Michael Jackson's house,” Klein recalls. “I was very busy and had a lot of work to do but the person kept saying, 'This is important, just get over here.'” So I drive over there and knock on the door and it's Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney and they're recording together!”
s

Similarly, Klein's highlight picks for this year's BBMA are also exclusive: Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood's debut performance of “Somethin’ Bad,” a duet featured on Lambert's upcoming album, “Platinum” (set to drop June 3), as well as Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull premiering the official anthem of this year’s FIFA World Cup, “We Are One (Ole Ola).” “It's those exclusive things you won't get anywhere else that make the Billboard Music Awards so great,” he says.
Adding to the star power, beyond top BBMA finalists Imagine Dragons, Lorde, and Justin Timberlake was this week's announcement that triple-threat rapper, producer and actor Ludacris is hosting Sunday's show. “I know him personally,” Klein says. “He's a talented musician, actor, entertainer -- he's going to be just great.”
For someone who is only 96 hours out from one of the year's biggest awards show, Klein is remarkably well-composed. He's currently going over the run of show, editing script, making sure the production runs smooth. He credits his team at dcp executive producers Allen Shapiro and Mike Mahan and producers Barry Adelman and Mark Bracco with getting this far. And the team has a lot to measure up to with 2013's banner year which saw the viewing audience hit 9.5 million, a 28 percent spike over 2012's audience, according to Nielsen.
Rehearsals are on and the Las Vegas MGM Grand Garden Arena is bustling -- rigs, electricians, carpenters, set designers and more are working around the clock for the big show that will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. EST on ABC. Klein discloses that several stages are being built, including a special stage for the Jackson event, as well as a smaller stage for Tiesto, who will be DJing throughout the night.
Asked if he's feeling pressure, Klien is ice cold. “Are you kidding?" he says. “I live for this.” Having done this for what is now his fifth decade, the veteran producer knows how to roll with the mishaps and even embrace them. “You never know what's going to happen," he adds. "Who's going to miss their cue or not show up to pick up their award -- that's what makes these shows fun.”

"Simulate a live encounter with someone who's no longer here"

Is that not exactly what I said in pretending to bring a dead person back to life? Some 3D projection isn't an experience that even slightly compares to seeing MJ when he was here.

ungrateful & pessimistic behavior. Fans who want Michael's legacy to continue will support these projects, of course they can't re create the exact experience.. but they ain't taking notice of your soul-less comments on something that is historic and presents innovation. something Michael was passionate for throughout his career. You just go back to tweeting about how much you love JB okay. bye.

Man, it never seems like anything related to MJ ever goes off without some kinda drama!

A virtual Michael ?

I like the sound of that better than a hologram. This could be something like we've never seen before. The man from the show is saying that it's like nothing we've ever seen before and it's amazing.

Everyone is so secretive about this who are connected with this.:)

I really hope it doesn't get cancelled because of that stupid lawsuit. We're going to be so disappointed and it will hurt the promotion of Xscape.

Some Tidbits: there are three companies involved. 1 - the company that owns the technology. 2 - the company that did the Tupac Hologram and 3 - Alki's company

Estate is working with the people that did Tupac hologram. The company had went bankrupt and the owner is now part of another company. Alki formed a partnership with the company that owns the technology in Feb 2014. That's the reason Alki claims it's their patent. The company owners of the Tupac hologram claim 1) they got a license from the original company way back and the license is still active - hence can use the technology if they want but 2) they aren't using the patent Alki mentioning.

Update: It's denied

Well, if that's the case it doesn't sound like Alki can stop this from happening Sunday. :)

And they take notice of you demanding 1080p HD concerts? This is a big moment and I'm not denying that. I just don't agree with it. No need to get all bitchy and "bye" about it.

Wheres the drama in that? xD

TBH though everything they have released since MJ passed has been screwed with. Especially some of the stuff I know about some releases, fans got screwed bigtime. hs

Holy s*** Birchey, I just watched the videos in your sig. I can't stop laughing

So it's still going ahead and in this situation rightly so. Such a pathetic suit to file. This will increase album sales?

Virtual Michael to shoot a music video too?

Re: Michael Jackson to Unleash World Premiere Experience At Billboard Music Awards

Can't wait for this - it will put Michael in the history books again. He would have loved it.

I really hope it's the first performance (tho I slightly doubt that), but then that way anyone who goes on stage throughout the night could mention it again thought the broadcast (i.e. "Wasn't that MJ performance incredible?!, blah blah...")

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A federal judge ruled Friday that the Billboard Music Awards can use a hologram of deceased pop icon Michael Jackson at this weekend's show, rejecting efforts from tech companies seeking to block the digital performance.

Judge Kent Dawson said there wasn't enough evidence to show the planned 3-D image would violate patents held by Hologram USA Inc. and Musion Das Hologram Ltd.

The companies own rights to technology known for digitally resurrecting deceased rapper Tupac Shakur at the 2012 Coachella music festival.

"The court's decision is not surprising," attorney Howard Weitzman, who represented Jackson's estate and dick clark productions, wrote in an email. "The request to stop this extraordinary Michael Jackson event was ludicrous."

Plans to use the hologram during the show Sunday emerged with the lawsuit, but they weren't confirmed until the hearing Friday afternoon. Show producers had been promoting only a "history-making performance" at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena that would promote the singer's latest posthumous album, "Xscape."

Hologram USA and Musion said in their emergency lawsuit Thursday that one of their products was being used without authorization by a competitor to create a segment that depicts Jackson performing a new song, "Slave to the Rhythm."

Dawson noted that the lawsuit didn't provide evidence that the company's patents were being used to create the Jackson hologram, and attorneys for the defendants said the techniques being used were in the public domain. Technology and visual tricks that can create holographic-type images have existed for decades, although the Shakur performance sparked more interest in creating realistic performances of dead celebrities.

Attorney Michael Feder, representing the show and Jackson estate, filed a response Friday, saying the holographic performance had been planned for months and was discussed with Alki David, who owns the rights to the technology that creates and projects lifelike images to appear alongside live performers through Hologram USA and Musion.

Plaintiff's attorney Ryan G. Baker said his clients were disappointed with the ruling, but the lawsuit will continue.

"It's only the very beginning of a case that will continue to be prosecuted by my clients, and ultimately they are confident that they will prevail and will recover all available damages for the defendants' infringing conduct," Baker said.

Hologram USA obtained the rights to the patents after the bankruptcy of Florida effects house Digital Domain, which created the Shakur image to wide acclaim two years ago.

The lawsuit also named John C. Textor, the chairman of Florida-based Pulse Entertainment Corp. who was the former head of Digital Domain. Pulse is accused of using the hologram techniques without a proper license. Textor said he could not comment publicly on the case.

The lawsuit names Atlanta-based Pulse Entertainment Inc. as a defendant. Spokesman Ken S. Johnson said the company was listed incorrectly because it had no connection the Billboard Music Awards.

In March, Hologram USA sued Cirque du Soleil and MGM Resorts International over its show, "Michael Jackson ONE" at Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino. The show features a performance by a digital rendition of Jackson, which the company also contends is an unlicensed use of its technology.

The case is being handled in a Los Angeles federal court. Cirque du Soleil and MGM Resorts have been granted an extension until May 23 to respond to the lawsuit.

I know right?? I can't wait! Seriously, a hologram isn't sinful.... we should be thankful it'll own the stage for a few minutes and remind people what we're missing not having Michael here... also, it'll be taking our minds off the stupid new abuse allegation (some truly unethical crap)

The company that did the Tupac thing? Daaamn. That's impressive, I hope it would be good as it sounds. I remember when that happened and went to watch the videos, it looked so real. But it was mostly CG or something like that. Not going to get my panties in a bunch though, going to keep my expectations low lol. But if it's awesome as they make it out to be, then there will be some knots to untie...

M
David says if Billboard goes ahead with the Jackson performance Sunday ... it will destroy his plans for a similar, high-profile holographic MJ performance. He wants a judge to stop it ... STAT.

Wth! He doesn't have right to use Michael's image so it cannot destroy his plans.

You know what? Maybe you should put your "hard core" fandom aside every now and then and think what is best for Michael.
I have been quite happy with what they have done and released, and my opinion is no less than yours.
I personally don't care if they have impersonator or personator or whatever, as long as it brings positive publicity to MJ and his music, as it has been ignored as discounted for way too long.
