John Mayer Slammed for "Racist" Remarks in Playboy

2f5f2a5d.jpg

Nevermind his crass remarks on Jessica Simpson.

John Mayer is coming under fire for comments he makes about African American women in his controversial March Playboy interview.

Asked "Do black women throw themselves at you?" Mayer, 32, replies:

"I don't think I open myself to it. My d*ck is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a fu*kin’ David Duke c*ck. I'm going to start dating separately from my d*ck. …I always thought Holly Robinson Peete was gorgeous. Every white dude loved Hilary from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. And Kerry Washington. She’s super hot and she’s also white-girl crazy. Kerry Washington would break your heart like a white girl. Just all of a sudden she’d be like, ‘Yeah, I sucked his d*ck. Whatever.'"

A rep for Washington, 33, had no comment.

Katheryn Russell-Brown, director of the Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations at the University of Florida and author of The Color of Crime, tells UsMagazine.com that Mayer seems to be saying "black women are not just not his type, they're not in his class. They're beneath him."

Adds Laurie L. Mulvey, co-director of the Race Relations Project at Penn State University: "Both white people and people of color will be offended by Mayer commenting so flippantly about an issue that has caused so much pain in this culture, especially to black women."

See famous celeb breakdowns

Mulvey tells Us that Mayer's comments "create an atmosphere that is unfriendly to building trust and his words once again reinforce the idea that people of color are objects and white people are racist. This has particular impact when such words come from a celebrity who is admired by people of so many different backgrounds."

Mulvey also says "choosing to invoke David Duke to explain these ethnocentric escapades flies in the face of Mayer's self-congratulatory claim that he has a 'Benetton heart.'"

Richard T. Ford, author of The Race Card: How Bluffing About Bias Makes Race Relations Worse, tells Us that Mayer is "being deliberately provocative and since he assures us that black people love him -- thanks for letting us know -- it's supposed to be okay."

The problem: Mayer's "tongue-in-cheek racism satirizes racial stereotypes and but also sort of traffics in them," Ford tells Us. "Sarah Silverman does post racist very adroitly -- she's both hilarious and thought provoking. Mayer does it badly -- he's offensive and tiresome."

Adds Ford, "Tragically, this is what passes for edginess for many celebrities today -- someone blurting out the most crude and insulting thing that comes to what we might charitably call his 'mind.' Mayer did say one smart in the interview: 'I think the world would be better off if I stopped doing interviews.' Amen."

Note to Black women- Do not give this tool the pleasure of your beautiful existence by even touching him with a ten-foot pole.

Mayer always runs off at the mouth way too much. I think he was trying to be witty as usual, but this time it backfired. He went too far with these comments.

I think I understand what he was trying to say but that's the problem in itself. It was wrong to say. Everyone (majority) has a preference. Some people like to date within their own race, others couldn't care less. Some people like short or tall. Thick and thin. It's like blondes or brunettes, however, the way Mayor went about it is all wrong and very thoughtless. Indeed, sometimes people should just keep their mouths shut.

Dang this is spreeding like crazy his comment, shocked to see it on mjjcommunity forum.

Dang mayer.

Someone call David Duke and tell him this, he'd be happy.
Mayer needs keep his ignorant statements to himself. I wish people would be less ignorant.

Something about John Mayer has always put me off....now this further proves my point of why. :puke:

Dr. Duke is the Minister Farrakhan or Director Abraham Foxman for white people. These three believe, in varying degrees, in a racialized world unlike our Michael who believed in a universal vision.

The ironic part is Mayer is Jewish so it is unlikely he would find common cause with Dr. Duke if that was his intent.

Really Mayer is JEwish? I didn't know that.. whatever he's still ignorant but I agree with you it's a shame all three are disgusting.

:mello:

some people should just keep their thoughts to themselves. It's because closed minds like this that me and my Fiance get stares at in USA. If you don't like black women cool but why the negative remarks. answer the question and keep it pushing.

Nothing surprise me anymore in this world :(

Thought we'd be further than this in this day and time.

John Mayer Breaks Down Onstage Over Playboy Debacle

"I quit the media game. I'm out. I'm done," a choked-up Mayer told the audience at the Sommet Center, an eyewitness tells E! News. "I just want to play my guitar."
Then, after a lengthy pause, he returned to his guitar solo.
His onstage sentiment resembled his last tweet from the day: "I just wanted to play the guitar for people. Everything else just sort of popped up and I improvised, and kept doubling down on it..."
As he had just reminded Twitter user "adilla": "They don't make rehab centers for being an a-hole." Audio: http://images.eonline.com/static/news/audio/JohnMayer.mp3

Okay, his interview for Playboy is even worst than I thought. There's more to it, and he ended up using the "N word" as well. Now he's trying to apologize for it. Too little, too late Mayer..

I wanna see the rest, because if it is true, I would tell him to go blow himself. He did'nt have to use that word prove the point. :/

It's not when he was talking about the women exactly. He was talking about something else. Here's more of the interview.

PLAYBOY: If you didn’t know you, would you think you’re a douche bag?

MAYER: It depends on what I picked up. My two biggest hits are “Your Body Is a Wonderland” and “Daughters.” If you think those songs are pandering, then you’ll think I’m a douche bag. It’s like I come on very strong. I am a very…I’m just very. V-E-R-Y. And if you can’t handle very, then I’m a douche bag. But I think the world needs a little very. That’s why black people love me.

PLAYBOY: Because you’re very?

MAYER: Someone asked me the other day, “What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?” And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a n***** pass. Why are you pulling a punch and calling it a hood pass if you really have a hood pass? But I said, “I can’t really have a hood pass. I’ve never walked into a restaurant, asked for a table and been told, ‘We’re full.’"

PLAYBOY: It is true; a lot of rappers love you. You recorded with Common and Kanye West, played live with Jay-Z.

MAYER: What is being black? It’s making the most of your life, not taking a single moment for granted. Taking something that’s seen as a struggle and making it work for you, or you’ll die inside. Not to say that my struggle is like the collective struggle of black America. But maybe my struggle is similar to one black dude’s.

John Mayer Apologizes for Using Racial Slur

After igniting a firestorm over sexual and racial remarks he made in a Playboy interview, John Mayer issued an apology on his Twitter page Wednesday – for some of his comments.

"Re: using the 'N' word in an interview, I am sorry," he Tweeted. "I should have never said the word and I will never say it again."

Mayer used the slur when discussing whether he's accepted by rappers like Jay-Z and Kanye West as one of their own.

"Someone asked me the other day, 'What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?,' " Mayer told Playboy. "If you really had a hood pass, you could call it a n---- pass But I said, 'I can't really have a hood pass. I've never walked into a restaurant, asked for a table and been told, 'We’re full.' "

The remark didn't wash with his 3 million Twitter followers. After one fan Tweeted that Mayer should enter rehab, the singer responded, "they don't make rehab centers for being an a-hole."

Mayer said nothing about his other controversial comments about his sex life with former flame Jessica Simpson – likening her to "sexual napalm" – but Simpson did appear to allude to them on her own Twitter page.

"Interesting day so far," she wrote. "Hmm. At least I am boxing 2-a-days this week."

I always saw him as a pretty sweet guy. What an obscene interview, especially for a mainstream magazine (if Playboy counts :p). But nah, I don't really know what to think of him now.

I think he was trying to be witty but it backfired completely. What an idiot.

What was he trying to say.. he finds black women attractive but his 'man-part' doesn't?

Oh dear Mayer, you FOOL. I follow him on twitter, he is a bit strange..

Just read the other bit of the interview..

and viewed his Twitter http://twitter.com/johncmayer

This is what he says about the N word.

Re: using the 'N word' in an interview: I am sorry that I used the word. And it's such a shame that I did because the point I was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it, because I realize that there's no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged. And while I'm using today for looking at myself under harsh light, I think it's time to stop trying to be so raw in interviews... It started as an attempt to not let the waves of criticism get to me, but it's gotten out of hand and I've created somewhat of a monster I wanted to be a blues guitar player. And a singer. And a songwriter. Not a shock jock. I don't have the stomach for it. Again, because I don't want anyone to think I'm equivocating: I should have never said the word and I will never say it again.

@CRHines17 True. But some mistakes are hard to pinpoint because they happen slowly and over long periods of time...

@adilla They don't make rehab centers for being an a-hole.

:bugeyed Oh my.

Wow, what a douche bag...
John Mayer always rubbed me the wrong way for some reason. My mom is the same way with him. There's just something about him that we don't really like...
