Re: 'Beat It' Cover A Huge Success

I don't like it to be honest. The music is okay as with most of the covers, but the singer completely sucks. Ruins the song for me.

God guitar playing though :p

Re: 'Beat It' Cover A Huge Success

Hearing this for the first time and am not impressed at all.....if you're gonna cover a song in my estimation, at least try to make it better than the original...this did'nt even come close!

In my opinion cover can never beat the original one.. The cover can be excellent and well done, but it can't be better.
After all original is always original :)

Ruins the song? That's maybe because you are used to hear it sang by Michael. You've a certain image on your mind how Beat It should sound like and that is how Michael sings it. Please, correct me if Im wrong ;)
You should also remember Michael and FOB both has a different styles and this is FOB's style.. If the song would sound exactly like Michael's version, it wouldn't be called a cover anymore.. it would be a replica :)

the singer's voice is terrible and irritating imo.

Fall Out Boy will work on a video homage to Michael Jackson classics!

(16-4-2008) According to The National Ledger, the group Fall Out Boy will work on a video homage to Michael Jackson classics. With Fall Out Boy's cover of 'Beat It' curently being a top iTunes hit, the band is planning for the video to be an homage to Michael's library of past videos. The National Ledger reports that casting was in full swing last week for various dancers, jump-roping girls, sumo wrestlers, nerds and "a hot Puerto Rican girl."

New Info on Fall Out Boy Beat It Video, Pete Wentz interviewed

Fall Out Boy Say Their 'Beat It' Clip Is Like All Of Michael Jackson's Videos 'But On A Fall Out Boy Budget'

'I don't know what our budget is, but I know it does not include enough to get him here,' Pete Wentz says of rumored MJ cameo.

By James Montgomery, with reporting by Yasmine Richard
Security was Fort-Knox-tight on the set of Fall Out Boy's new video - for their cover of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" - and not just because of the whole "Is Pete Wentz a daddy-to-be?" drama that's been following the band for a week now.
No, the reason we're not allowed to actually show you anything from the shoot is because the guys in FOB are rather worried that you'll make fun of the clothes they've been forced to wear by director Shane C. Drake - which could generously be described as "Poison-meets-Spandau Ballet/ NKOTB," only w-a-a-y more embarrassing.
"Shane described the treatment to me, and I didn't get it at all. I mean, it's cool, it's awesome, and I trust his vision, but it all sounded very strange to me, so I don't really know what I'm doing half the time, hence the reason I got talked into wearing this," Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump laughed, pulling at his tattered acid-washed jeans and varsity jacket. "I think we're shooting for 1984, but it looks as though 1988 exploded all over me. I mean, these clothes are totally not strange at all, and they're very comfortable. And they look great on me."
"My costume is this take on one of the guys from Michael Jackson's original 'Beat It' video, like, the guy who plays the rival dancer," bassist Wentz added. "He's in this yacht gear/ dance-gang-fight-gear-attire get-up. Which is amazing. I look pretty good."
Take our word for it: The costumes are pretty epic. And aside from the fashion, here's what else we can tell you about the "Beat It" video: It's less of a remake of MJ's original clip as it is an homage to the Gloved One's entire oeuvre, with cameos aplenty. In fact, while we were on set, we witnessed FOB wandering a Chinatown alleyway, only to stumble onto a karate class/ impromptu-dance session being taught by Tony Hale, who most (OK, most with taste) know from his role as Buster Bluth on the late, lamented "Arrested Development."
Seriously.
"I think when you're doing a Michael Jackson cover, there's this expectation that you're going to do one of his videos verbatim," Stump said. "What we decided to do was kind of inspired by Michael Jackson and the mythology of him. There are specific images that are reference points for us, but at any given point, it's not any of his videos. It's kind of all of his videos, all at once, but on a Fall Out Boy budget, so it's not quite as fancy."
"If there were all these places where MJ can make his comeback, I would suggest this video," Wentz laughed. "He should really let the world know he's still around. I don't know what our budget is, but I know it does not include enough to get him here. Multiple calls were not returned. I don't think Michael Jackson has a number."
And even though the budget is a tad bit low by MJ standards, Fall Out Boy promise that fans can still look forward to a spectacle worthy of the King of Pop, which means elaborate costuming, exotic locales and, of course, lots and lots of dancing ... just not a whole lot of if being done by anyone actually in Fall Out Boy.
"There's not too much dancing coming from us. I think other members of the band may be doing some dancing, but I don't dance. Gangsters kinda boogie, you know what I'm saying?" Wentz said. "I think trying to emulate Michael Jackson is funny. You can't do it that well. If you try and do it, it's kind of a bummer. Chris Brown pulls it off very well, I've seen some Japanese people who can bring it around ... I personally can't, so I won't go and embarrass myself or anyone else."

Re: 'Beat It' Cover A Huge Success

Ugh. A video? I was hoping the emo-rock destruction of Beat It could be kept at a minimum notoriety.

UGH! I totally agree with you. I can't stand that now some dumb people will say - HEY DID YOU HEAR A NEW SONG FROM FOB? Not that I have anything against them, but I am REALLY sick of ppl earning fame over Mike's name. (rhyme, lol) I know I know it's PAYING TRIBUTE but UGH! It's the people's ignorance that kicks me down.

And why in the world do artists cover and sample only songs from Thriller? Is it because they are sure it will be a success? That sucks! Michael's 90's work is WAAAAAAAAAY underrated.

Re: 'Beat It' Cover A Huge Success

I disagree. I think it is a factual inaccuracy that Fall Out Boy's Beat It is better, and will even go as far as to say that believing it should be considered cause for receiving a mental evaluation. It's just ludicrous. I don't even consider it an opinion.

On that, you and I agree. If one has any standards, you can't factually say Fall Out Boy's version of this song is better then Michael's.

Fall Out Boy Released 'Beat It' By Accident, But Still Dream Of World Tour With Michael Jackson

When Fall Out Boy decided to record their cover version of Michael Jackson's "Beat It," they had one goal in mind: to make a song so triumphant that it would somehow convince the King of Pop to come out of hiding and join them on the road for an epic (and costly) world tour.

Actually, we're lying. There was no goal. Truth be told, the whole thing was pretty much just an accident.

"We never really planned this to happen," Fall Out frontman Patrick Stump laughed. "Basically, I just started playing the riff in sound-check one day, and then we all started playing it, and then we started playing it live, and then we figured we'd record it and put it out with our live DVD. And so we put it out, and then radio started playing it, and then it got huge on iTunes. It was on the top 10 there, and so we were like, 'Psssh, I guess it's a single then.' "

"It was kind of a snowball," bassist Pete Wentz added. "We didn't plan on it being a single, but I hate when bands put out DVDs and they're basically an excuse to have you buy the record twice. We wanted our DVD to have real value, so we did this ... and it sort of spiraled into iTunes and all that stuff. And that's why we're doing this video, because I should be at my house eating honeydew melon."

It bears mentioning that this conversation took place on the set of the "Beat It" video, a super-secret shoot that took place last week in Los Angeles and featured a karate-dance squad, oversize bodyguards in designer shades and a cameo by "Arrested Development" star Tony Hale. And if that weren't proof enough that FOB know only one way to do things — big — consider the fact that their version of "Beat It" also features a white-hot guitar solo from none other than John Mayer, because, well ... just because.

"Back in the day, Eddie Van Halen played on 'Beat It,' and I don't believe he was in the video," Wentz explained. "And we were trying to think about who is a contemporary guitar guy who's going to go down as a legend. And to be honest with you, there aren't as many high-profile young ones. And John really is. ... He's a prolific guitarist. And so I hit him up and asked if he'd want to do it, and he said, 'Yeah.' ... And then he just did it. He's like, 'I'm gonna do it,' and then he e-mailed me five minutes later and was like, 'You wanna hear it?' It was that quick."

So with a high-profile video and an even higher-profile cameo, aren't Fall Out Boy the least bit excited to hear what Michael thinks of their take on his hit? Well, yeah. Even though they're a huge rock band, they're also MJ fans. But they're also realists, and as such, they're not expecting to hear a word from the King of Pop.

"I don't even know if he's even heard our cover of his song, or even heard of my band or anything, so he is absolutely not involved in this in any way, shape or form," Stump said. "I absolutely love Michael Jackson's music, but the likelihood of that happening ... well, let's just say that will not happen. At best, maybe he'll be sitting around, flipping through channels, and he might see the video and go, 'Oh, this is OK.' That's the most I can hope to get out of the Gloved One. I'm not expecting a big 'Let's go on tour together' thing."

Re: Fall Out Boy Released 'Beat It' By Accident, But Still Dream Of World Tour With Michael Jackson

What a cool article...wow I would never guess that they loved Michael's music....thanks

Re: Fall Out Boy Released 'Beat It' By Accident, But Still Dream Of World Tour With Michael Jackson

HA!!!!! This is so great to hear. It is funny to know that FOB didn't even really plan this. From playing the riff on soundcheck to making a music vid. Great stuff here!

The fact that Fall Out Boy is giving so much props to Michael and also mentioning that they are true fans of his music, this is gonna get the younger crowd interested!

This is also great timing.....odd really.....but great timing!

Re: Fall Out Boy Released 'Beat It' By Accident, But Still Dream Of World Tour With Michael Jackson

Most people don't even realize what an amazing guitarist John Mayer is! I didn't even know he did the solo until now!

Fall Out Boy + Michael Jackson would be...weird. :p

Re: Fall Out Boy Released 'Beat It' By Accident, But Still Dream Of World Tour With Michael Jackson

Sorry but I cannot stand Fall Out Boy, or Panic! Or any of this "Pop Punk"

But high five for them giving rep to Michael.

I LOVE JOHN MAYER!!!!!!!!!!! Him + Michael = Awesome in my book!

Re: Fall Out Boy Released 'Beat It' By Accident, But Still Dream Of World Tour With Michael Jackson

Awwww, I knew they loved MJ already cause someone told me (and I checked it out myself!) That on their clothing website it has Pete's "things I like" and among other things is a pic of the 'thriller' album.
Also, I know that they had a video countdown and put thriller on there and said it was the best video, or something like that. And I've heard them mention MJ a few times!

Re: Fall Out Boy Released 'Beat It' By Accident, But Still Dream Of World Tour With Michael Jackson

Cool article :D Thanks a lot! So happy to see they love Michael that much:D :)!
The video will premiere soon right? :)

Re: Fall Out Boy Released 'Beat It' By Accident, But Still Dream Of World Tour With Michael Jackson

That's cool. I personally can't stand them musically, but it's cool that they're giving such respect to Michael.

Re: Fall Out Boy Released 'Beat It' By Accident, But Still Dream Of World Tour With Michael Jackson

There's a video about it on youtube and shows them rehearsing for it a little bit. Looks pretty good. I'd show it, but under the circumstances.....well obviously I can't. But if y'all want to, you can probably look it up under the topics Fall Out Boy Beat It MTV, or something like that. It was MTV.com that made the report.

Re: Fall Out Boy Released 'Beat It' By Accident, But Still Dream Of World Tour With Michael Jackson

Evidently I can post it, but seeing as im lazy at the moment........eh......if you want to look it up you can. No big deal really.

I honestly think that there is a rush to record Michael jackson songs now because many musicians realise how popular MJ songs are. SO many bands and artists sing at least one MJ songs in their concerts and they are invariably a hit with the crowds. MJ songs are popular. Fall out boys have gained in popularity since they have been singing Beat it at their concerts.

Really? I didn't know this. Do you know of any other bands other than AAF and FOB who have covered MJ songs at their concerts? I know Alicia covered Human Nature at one time, but it wasn't on her tour.

I do agree that FOB has suddenly come back into the media circle since covering Beat It, but their popularity as an alternative/punk band has been pretty staple. I don't think Beat It made much of a difference, other than it got on the top ten on iTunes really fast.

Either way.......I'm just loving this whole thingy. Again, I say, great timing on this shindig!!
