Hawkins given key to city

Honky tonk prince Ronnie Hawkins, also known as Rompin' Ronnie and The Hawk - a man who danced like Elvis Presley before Elvis Presley did, and did the moonwalk before Michael Jackson, now owns a key to the City of Peterborough.
The Evinrude Centre was filled with swinging rockabilly electricity and about 175 guests who turned out for the eighth mayor's dinner and fundraiser for Homegrown Homes.
The event was also to honour the legendary rock musician - who came to Canada in 1958 and now makes his home on Stony Lake - with a roast and toast.
Hawkins' work in the community - notably the Festival of Lights and the 2004 flood relief concert - earned him the honour bestowed only to the most distinguished citizens of Peterborough, said Mayor Paul Ayotte following the event.
"Ronnie takes young people and gives them the confidence to succeed," he told the crowd.
"And in 2004 at the flood concert Ronnie gave us the confidence that we would make it through."
That concert raised $1.5 million. No one at the event could remember a larger single day fundraiser in the history of Peterborough.
Hawkins was one of the first to come to the city's aid after the flood, Ayotte said.
"That kind of leadership and community giving make it an honour he deserves."
"I wonder how many doors I could open with this key," Hawkins said with a mischievous glimmer in his eye after being presented with the key.
In his famous husky Southern drawl, Hawkins gives out lines that only he could get away with.

Competition challenges students to improv for money
Comic juggles performance, activism
“I got e-mails from humanitarian aid workers in African refugee camps that made me weep. Of course for them the lyrics, ‘Once there was a way to get back home,’ had incredible meaning.
“They’re dealing with these children and families who don’t know if they’ll ever have anything they can call home again. What I was reading from people was all the same thing — they had been looking for something to lift them up and this performance had done that.
“I turned down a lot of shows that just wanted me to come on and juggle,” said Bliss, who in 1984 laid claim to the title of world’s most famous juggler by being the opening act for Michael Jackson during his Victory tour.

Vengeance and his bandmates borrowed from a lifetime of influences for inspiration, including Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash, Social Distortion, NOFX and Metallica.
"We basically took the entire library of music that we've always loved, and tried to use every bit of it for this album," Vengeance said. "We wanted to break wide open any kind of pigeon hole of what Avenged Sevenfold might be, and incorporate all sorts of styles of music that we love."

Vanity Fair spotted her as a glamorous personage, and Armitage soon was directing music videos and keeping company with the likes of Madonna, star fashion designers and art star David Salle, with whom she had a long romantic relationship.
She choreographed a music video for Michael Jackson when he was at the top of the heap. Mikhail Baryshnikov, then director of the American Ballet Theater, came backstage after one of her shows and asked her to create something for the big company. Rudolf Nureyev gave her the same offer on behalf of the Paris Opera Ballet.

Michael Jackson HIStory:
1984 - Michael Jackson's single "P.Y.T." hit #11 in the U.K.
1993 - Essayist Anne Taylor Flemming appeared on the "MacNeil-Lehrer NewsHour" and said, "If either of the two [Madonna or Michael Jackson] is the logical heir to Marilyn Monroe, it is clearly Michael Jackson, who is the more bruised and authentically vulnerable of the two....Not only is he black and white, male and female, but also young and old, hip and square, the crotch-grabbing self-appointed guardian of the world's children."
