King of pop?

I think it's only a couple people saying he's not KOP, wannabe. Good points, though.

I know, I just was grouping them into a lump sum, lol.

Besides that, I just scanned over the comments because after a while of reading this kinda stuff day in and day out, your head starts to feel like its imploding, lol.

i won't argue with that (in terms of modern pop artists - i.e. after Elvis and Beatles).
No trying to compare them but One poster here said his parents has lived through the Elvis and the Beatles era and they have never seen anything like what Michael did. He practically drew the world into a frenzy state.

the problem is, to me music is everything and saying King of Pop - on the music side, is flawed. you can't compare nor measure the influence and impact of those popular artists on music. in fact, the great majority of the modern soulful acts that i have come be a fan of cite the likes of Marvin Gaye and Prince more than they would Michael - and yet i enjoy Mike's music a bit more than those guys

If that's the case, same goes to every other artists with the title. Anyway, he's achieved the greatest achievement in pop history, no one deserve the title more than he does.

(btw, can music fans stop using record sales as indicators? because Britney Spears outsold Stevie Wonder)
I didn't.:)

and i can see where people are coming from in terms of entertainment - if i would have to choose a silly public title for anyone (you can see i'm not a fan of titles), then it would be King of Entertainment for MJ. that would suit best, i'd say.

otherwise, i'll stick with the obvious fact that each great popular artist is doing their own thing (otherwise they wouldn't be attributed with greatness), and comparisons would be without logic, imo.
King of Entertainment, not a bad title.

Michael's the King of Pop because he's sold more records and broken more records and holds more records then any other recording artist in history. It's got jack all to do with "what he's done lately". It's called "pop" and it's an abbriviation for the world "popular", meaning how much commercial success have you achieved.

Did you all convienently forget that Michael's entire life was put on hold, was actually haulted to a dead stop, for over two years because his life was hanging in the balance? And are you all really suggesting that Michael so easily forget about that and recover right away, just bounce back and do something on the world stage, while everyone, EVERYONE is watching, immeadietely following? And did you all really expect Michael to just turn around and act like nothing had happened when he was being attacked maliciously for the two years leading up to that trial, over that documentary, over him holding Blanket over a balcony for 2 seconds, for this, that and nine million other things? Some fans really are too much sometimes. Michael couldn't do anything for damn near 5 years, from 2001, in which he released an entirely new album which his record lable decided to kill, all the way through 2005. That's not even including recovery time from what happened to him. Do you realize that Michael lost 20lb. during the trial? 20lb., to someone like him, is a massive amount of weight. He was really sick, really sick, and he needed to recover. That's just physically. Emotionally, it will probably never fully go away. But look, less then a year after what happened to him, he was back in the studio and is, as of this very moment, working his ass off to put out a good album for all of us. So don't come in here talking some smack about how he hasn't done anything since 2002. PLEASE!
Some fans dont empathize with him at all.
:( that's sad.

exactly my thoughts.

King of Entertainment, not a bad title.
definitely more appropriate, imo. for undoubtedly being the greatest performer i have ever known, a genius when it comes to good music, undoubtedly the best dancer in his field, knows how to put on a great show and for his visions for short films, it just puts it in a better perspective without being dismissive of others.

still, though.. titles :puke: LOL

I agree, he's right up there with Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, and Prince in my books as a performer.

I personally hate all these tile. King of Pop, King of Rock 'n' Roll, Queen of Pop, Queen of Soul, it's all ridunkulous. It just creates a lot of conflict. You've got MJ fans getting angry when noobs like JT and Usher are called the KOP. You've got Chuck Berry, Little Richard fans saying they are the real KoRnR. There's Aretha Franklin her self getting pissed because Beyonce called Tina Turner the "Queen". It just gets ridunk some times.

According to your argument it doesn't matter what it is, as long as it's current. As long as he's doing SOMETHING. As long as he's doing something now...so u must not prefer Invincible, but Invincible did go to number one in 14 countries so i dunno why u skipped that one when u say 13 years of nothing.

And believe me Invincible was more quality than anything that came out in 2001 even if u don't think it's up to par with MJ's other albums.

So it's been 7 years since his last project. Between the Bad and Dangerous release, he took 6 years. And MJ was the KOP THEN. I guess MJ isn't the king of pop between 1986 and 1992 right? LOL Even though no one has topped his accomplishments. Makes no sense, explain that one to me.

People have come up with good arguments here, so I'm wondering y u can't come up with any that support urs yet u continually like to avoid questions. People just don't have opinions to have them...they can usually support them.

I don't care anymore. You aren't worth talking with lol. Sorry buddy.

It's silly to argue over this, anyway, it's just a title. King Of Pop or not, Michael Jackson makes good music.

We may think MJ is or was the king of pop. but the "normal" man in the street dose not think that.
Some of my frinds wa saying. "what?...is that man still around??"
They see him as finish. and nobody...and I then mean NOBODY that I have benn taliking to dose think invinceble is a good album.
I think it has some good songs. but the normal man dosen´t like it. MJ has to prov again to be the king of pop. he cant live on thriller anymore.

I really think he can make it. but he needs the ringht people around him. and im not really sure if he has the right people. Like the new songs on thriller 25 sounds to me like they are "desperat" to be hipp. but they are really really bad. and nobodu of us will became a fan if that was the only songs we have heard from mj.

sorry

Really? Everyone I know, when you say "King of Pop", the one and only person they associate that term with is Michael Jackson. I think Michael is very much known, commonly, as the King of Pop. They always refer to him as such in every article written about him, whether that's by calling him it directly or using it even as an insult by saying former or self-proclaimed, the title is still somehow associated with him.

And Michael hasn't ever lived on "Thriller". He puts out one anniversary edition of the album and people suddenly accuse him of living on his past laurals, that's rich.

Please don't tell me you're still arguing about this damn title. He is the king of pop whether you like it or not - and none of you can take that away from him. I remember those never ending discussions during the trial when everybody would use this smiley :banghead: after almost every scentence . I so feel like doin that again.

Awwh, feel sorry for you then. Funny thing is that I know many people who don't like thriller or off the wall but think Invincible's awsome. It's only a matter of taste.
People got used to trashing it for some reason, which I gotta say, I find pretty sad. But we shouldn't be talkin about that now.

The truth is the public knows Michael Jackson as the king of pop - they may not like him &/or his music but when you say 'the king of pop' everybody thinks of Michael. everybody. Don't even tell me that you don't agree with me.

Oh btw now you know someone who thinks that Invincible's a good album - Hi!

I don't care anymore. You aren't worth talking with lol. Sorry buddy
How nice is that? wow.

I don`t know- but isn`t it a obvious lack of logic in the need to say he is "the self- proclaimed KOP" etc....?
He has the title, as a lot of people have said- due to his achievments. Witch has not been challenged to this day by anyone ( one can discuss musical taste/ accomplishments/ performances etc...but this is about commercial success on a world wide arena within the field of popular music- not about measuring one kind of quality against another. Like comparing fresh apples against boiled potatos- its kind of stupid to compare people who are not playing in the same field)

Before Michael, was there anyone who was called the KOP? I can`t honestly remember. For me, the term is linked with Michael, just as mutch as the Fedora, the glove and all other things that make him a Icon. As mutch of a "brand", as coca cola, Pepsi, McDonalds etc.....names that are instantly recongnized all over the world. Just look at the SoBe Pepsi water commercial: Lizzards doing the Thriller dance. People are not thinking "cool danceing by those lizzards"- they are thinking about Michael Jackson and Thriller. Instantly. No further explanation needed. THAT is what commercial/ pop culture is about. Show me anyone who holds that position of the artists today, in as many age groups and segments of the population.

I think some of the reson why people react when the title is questioned, is just that it seems like an insult, and it sounds fake. As long as no one has truly trumphed his acchievments.

I can understand that some age groups don`t understand it. Young people who has no real experience with what made him sutch a figure of popular culture, and doesn`t know the history of it all- to them its like asking how Coca Cola became the brand name it is. They don`t know, unless they personally do a reserch, or experience it. So in a way, its natural for a lot of people to question it. Along with the marketing people/ music industry/ entertainment news etc... wanting to focus on whats happening today, in order to sell their products. Thats how it works, and thats why Justin Timberlake along with a lot of others gets "crowned" with the title, even if everyone knows its "fake".
And that is, in my opinion not mutch to care about. Cause everyone knows what that is all about.

The "self proclaimed" thing on the other hand, is an insult.

Not where Im standing. Everyone i know may think he's crazy but 'still the KOP'...thats the phrase I always hear. Just because in ur perspective u see that doesnt mean its true for the 'normal man'. I know TONS of people who love invincible and own it.

MJs not living off of thriller. MJ always has re released his back catalogue in some shape or form before a new album. Thats just good marketing.

Like the new songs on thriller 25 sounds to me like they are "desperat" to be hipp. but they are really really bad. and nobodu of us will became a fan if that was the only songs we have heard from mj.

sorry
Well its selling like HOT CAKES right now and I bet u ANYTHING there will be fans made of that. TONS of people LOVE Akon, the Black Eyed Peas and Kanye and will be buying the album for their favorite artist only...they will be exposed to MJ's music and BAM...instant fan. I dont think u understand why this thing was made in the first place.

If people can become fans off of LWMJ, i think it's very plausible they become fans off of THRILLER lol

I don't care anymore. You aren't worth talking with lol. Sorry buddy.
Arent people just sooo mature? I guess that means that my argument made too much sense.

I can understand that some age groups don`t understand it. Young people who has no real experience with what made him sutch a figure of popular culture,
Nop thats not true. Its close minded people. Im 20, live in america (where MJ is supposedly over) I became a fan of MJ in 1996. I know MJ is the KOP....i know tons of people who know MJ is the KOP, and know tons of fans of MJ, closet fans or no. I know people who arent fans who would admit MJ is the KOP lol

Ok, people those are honorary titles, not titles per se. Given out of respect and admiration. Unique titles that should stick with the artist forever. Elvis will be forever King of Rock and Roll, James Brown the GodFather of Soul, Aretha Franlking the Queen of Soul, Michael Jackson the King of Pop...

For example if Timberlake wants a title for himself, he could be The Sexy Back, I don't care, he is free to carry it. The most important point here is respect and admiration. Let those artists with their titles, they worked hard and they deserve them, even if those titles are just beautiful words and nothing else.... and we are fully aware of this.

Let newer artists find their own titles, their fans shouldl find those titles for them. I stronglly disagree with naming recent acts The New KOP, or new Godfather of Soul etc, those titles are already taken, people need more imagination, they need to search/invent for new titles for the new artists.

Why those titles are necesarry? Those are part of the game, entertainement game, it's like people put beautiful names on their favourite artists. It's a blend between emotion and being objective, sometimes it's more emotion, sometimes objectiveness, but who cares? In this big game of entertainment we all should learn to respect and be imaginative towards the newer artists.
Do not de-throne the older ones, just to make place for newer ones - there's enough place for everybody! :scorerer:

You're totally missing the point lol. Argh.

When MJ brought out Thriller he was the King. Now he's using that again, and not bringing out any new material! He's living in the past.

Don't get me wrong I love MJ, but be realistic about it.

No mickyj007 I'm not missing the point, 'PREPARATION' is 'Key' and a clue as to why he wears the crown.

I agree. Well said.

^^ Exactly. Why are we even arguing about this, anyway? Michael Jackson was (and still is) the King Of Pop, whether some certain members like it or not.

i agree. to me it's like the queen of england. in the end, they are both named by people who are no better than you and me. so...if i refuse to acknowledge the queen of england as queen of england..that's my right.

that's how i see it. if i don't wanna see the president of the usa as the president(which by the way, some party opposers did not see him as, because of how they say the voting went) then that's my right. it's all a matter of mental programming if people think i'm crazy for saying this.

i realize that i would abide by who the president is...and who the queen of england is. and though some people may not take the KOP one seriously...it's abided by, anyway, everytime we turn on a video channel, or listen to music, or see a movie such as 'step up 2' which is number 1 at the box office in the usa. so it's bigger than us, and there's nothing we can do about it.:)

Well....that is all ages ago..show us somthing new???....he may be thin king of pop from the past!...but still...25 years!!!!...and we still look back!

anyway...where is that documentery from...I want to see all of it!!!:)

The most recent record Michael broke was his last performance with his shows at MSG for his 30th anniversary. He drew in the biggest audience for a musical special in CBS history, with 40 plus million at the point in the show in which he performed. He also drew in over 20 million viewers I believe when the Bashir documentary aired. He draws bigger viewership then anyone, even still. And since "King of Pop" is based on popularity, meaning how much interest you gnerate and how much appeal you have, Michael still very much holds that title. Also, you may not like "Invincible", but the fact remains that the album sold upwards of 10 million copies, last time we heard, and that's more then Justin Timberalkes two solo efforts, and Justin is supposed to be the biggest pop star today. He hasn't embarked on many projects since then, for reasons I already explained, the events following "Invincible", the fall out from the aftermath of the Bashir Documentary, the trial, which almost killed Michael, and the recovery time involved.

^^ Not only that T25 getting to no. 2 also achieves a significant milestone in that it hadn't happen since 1996

Billboard says,
More on the Grammys in a moment, but first, we switch our attention to the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart. Any title that is 18 months or older, including reissues of older albums, finds a home on this 50 position chart. That includes the 25th anniversary reissue of Michael Jackson's landmark 1982 album "Thriller." The set, expanded to include reworkings of some of the original album's songs by Akon, Kanye West, Fergie and will.i.am storms the chart at No. 1, selling 166,000. That's not only the best sales week for Jackson since 2001, but also the biggest number any catalog title has seen since Christmas week of 1996, when Kenny G's "Miracles - The Holiday Album," powered through 192,000.
Thanx to TCSM for posting article.

People are usually awarded for past achievements, achievements accompliahed, not present or future ones. I was awarded a degree for my past work, so am I to return it because I don't study anymore? Should Paul McCartney return his title to the Queen because he doesn't work anymore?
If you don't like the title and begrudged MJ of it, then you don't have to use it. But has you see, dispite what the media is trying to tell you, MJ owns that title and he isn't going to give it up. He IS the people's choice, even if the media don't like it, and this week confirms it woth the sale of an old album. The so called biggest act today, still needed him at the grammies to bring the crowd to them. MJ could have his own grammies and invite the strs and they would all turn up and a multitude of people, all over the world would be there to watch. That is power. That is what being KING is.

acctually...thriller is not the world most sold CD ever. there are CD´s and artist in Asia and India that has sold many more CD´s than MJ....way aren´t they the king of pop?

he may was the king of pop...but he is not anymore....the meidi saye "the self crowned" king. and I can understand that. bacash he somthimes see him looking like a king....hehe

Uh... no. "Thriller" is recognized in the Guiness Book of World Records as having sold more copies then any other album in history. It held that record starting in 1983 and it hasn't ever lost that record. And Michael is more famous then anyone else in the world as well, that's a fact. He's also the biggest selling solo artist in history, having sold over 700 million albums and singles in total.

Because they are not popular miusic. They only sell to their own kind. MJ is popular worldwide. What part of that don't you understand? Why is it that with all this man has achieved he still needs to prove himself to you? Is it because of his ethnicity?:huh:
Do you question the achievements of others who look like you?-_-

Becuase no one ever heard of them and they are NOT POPular music

Yes Michael does look very regal and kingly at times .

you dont have to call MJ KOP or think of him as KOP
thats your perogotive .. many stars have titles
Its show biz ... and when they retire the Title
is still theirs ..

Why are you so concerned about Michael being KOP ??
Seem you are just trying to stir the POt --

you Just like controversy.
and you are starting to repeat yourself -

Michael Jackson was reportedly axed from the Grammy Awards after making a series of "diva-like" demands.

The 49-year-old singer - who was scheduled to appear at the ceremony earlier this month for a tribute marking the 25th anniversary of his album 'Thriller' - allegedly infuriated event bosses by insisting the whole evening be dedicated to his career.

Jackson is believed to have asked the show's presenters to refer to him as 'The King of Pop' at least 30 times throughout the night.

He also wanted a new award to be created just for him and presented to him by an honouree of his choice, according to the New York Post newspaper.

Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich, who had been desperate to get Jackson to appear at the show, is said to have retracted the invitation when the demands got too out of control.

Jackson had been hoping to promote his re-released version of 'Thriller' - entitled 'Thriller: 25th Anniversary' which features collaborations with stars including will.i.am and Kanye West.

The album went on sale the day after the Grammy Awards on February 11.
