MJ's choreography being stolen step for step? You decide

I don't get it? What are they saying, what's the purpose of this video?

Sorry everyone, I just got off work. Fill me in....-_-

It's video of Chris Brown rehearsing dance moves for an upcoming project. The choreographer is James Moody. The guys with the camera are clowning the work because they recognize it at Michael's and they're saying James didn't change one step from Michael's original routine.

lol..it makes it even harder for them not to copy since they're using an MJ song, lol

yeah...they can't help it. Moody can't stir away from the great innovator

new age of sampling for dance, perhaps? :/

Ooohh, I understand now. Thanks for explaining sweets.

Geeze, they really need to invent an 'ago restraint machine' for people like these.:lol:

Well besides the fact that they're dancing to "Get on the Floor", the first part of the choreogrpahy is stolen from Michael's live performance of "Jam". Way to go Chris. And Moody, lol.

stop ugh. This is going too far. I actually heard one of my students say that Michael Dances like chris brown....i was shocked. And I taught her the Real ABC's of music. Dang, I don't mind paying homage...he best be wearing a daggon MJ tshirt in the vid...or sportin' some signature MJ style to make it obvi that he's just payin' homage. We'll see.

i cant see any of mikes choreography.. i must be blind?

Yeah.....which MJ chorepgrahy is that supposed to be? I can't rememebr MJ ever having done a choreography like that with hand clapping and all that stuff...? I'm confused....

whats scary is...I've heard that a lot from various people myself. Not just for CB, but for USHER too.

Nobody's original. Everybody has copied something from someone else. It's just like music, there's only 7 notes. Does this look familiar?

Chris Brown might play a little tribute to MJ here and there, but his choreography is a lot different. A lot more street

The only MJ choreography that i thought has some street moves in it was Remember The Time and some of the dangerous dance routine. The part where MJ flips the guy, then walks over him and they bust out in to a couple of hip hop style dance steps.

Bad, Beat it, Way you make me feel choreograpy is more classical type dancing. Especially Bad. When i watch the Bad dancing, i picture the 1984 tv show fame and that definetely was not street dancing.

Also the beginning when he does a little MJ move, that's not even part of the choreography. He was just basically having fun. The part where the guy says 5, 6, 7, 8. That's when the routine starts.

Well, that's true. MJ's moves etc has been influenced by James Brown, Fred Astaire, etc. Michael has always said it too. He has always said how much they inspired him. That's why I don't mind when people have "MJ stuff" in their videos, because it shows that MJ and his work inspired them. But if they don't mention MJ with one word or do EVERYTHING Michael did or wore...that's when it stops being funny. Like MJ took some influiences from Fred Astaires work an ddancing but he didn't COPY everything. Plus he gave him credit by saying he adores Astaire

^^^ I was about to say that Summer, the annoying part is that since these guys aren't saying much about how MJ influenced them (CB did for a while) then idiots who have no knowledge of music beyond 5 years ago start thinking that it's them who are amazing and give no credit to the greatnes that is MJ.

i think wannabe made a great post a while ago about what MJ does as far as sampling moves and such verses what CB and Usher does. And there's a big difference. She articulated it well.

The beggining of the choreography is from Michael's live performance of "Jam". Look closer.

Anyway, it's one thing to do a step which has already been done before, almost EVERY step you see has been done before in some manner, it's another thing to actually take a choreographed routine, that's how you put the steps together, and pretend its your own when its not. That's really the choreographers fault, not Chris'.

Michael was able to take steps which obviously have been done before, as the human body can only go in so many directions, but it's the way he combines those steps that creates a unique style. Chris Brown looks like a typical street dancer, he's got no defining look to the way he moves which you could associate with him.

And yes, Chris Brown's dancing is much more street then Michael's. Michael isn't a street dancer, he's just a pure dancer who does some of every form, but is mainly influenced by jazz dancing. He moves more similarly to Fred Astaire and Bob Fosse then he does James Brown, for example, or any of the street dancers he's picked up steps from.

The main difference between Michael and all these cats isn't the steps they do, it's how well they move. Michael just moves better then Chris Brown or any other dancer out there. More fluid, quicker, more accurate.

That's absolutely true! His moves really flow...they have "life" in them and it doesn't look like he is "dancing" (if you know what I mean....sort of like MJ said...the "five six seven eight" thing)...It's eally hard to explain what I mean, but some dancers "finish every move"...not that Michael doesn't do it too, but when some dancers do it it looks just like that....that they are "dancing". like "pull your hand here, five....twist it like THIS...SIX....throw it out like that...seven..." where as MJ's moves are more like his feelings...you know "Pull the hand...whooosh.....twist it......wheeeee...throw it out....POW"....Anyone know what I mean??!! :lmao: His dancing looks more "smooth"...like he's "living the song".

I think I mean sort of like this....Check out the dancing from 5:06 on. Look at the other dancers...especially the blonde guy on the right....and then look at MJ and how he does the moves. The other dancer's moves are more like *Chop chop chop chop*...really, what's the word, "choppy"? Where as MJ's moves are more smooth and flowing and they don't "end" like to a wall but they flow. Am I making any sense?

(And I still really can't see where the MJ choreograohy is in that video posted in the beginning... )

^^^ yep its all about the feeling. It comes from the heart not the brain. Thats what makes MJ so captivating.

ARGHHH it's stuff like this that i can't stand
i dont understand it at all

as far as chris brown is concerned i just think he goes way too far with everything he takes from michael. i've said it times before that i think he's talented but it's just much too much. i wish he would do something a little more original. even though michael has been influenced by others i don't think it's at all to the extend some of these other singers are doing with Michael.

however as far as this video of chris brown's choreography is concerned are we all sure that the choreographer is talking about Michael when he said that he hasn't changed one step? does he mean the whole routine? cuz i dont remember that choreography in stuff that michael has done aside from just the beginning part.

You actually know exactly what you're talking about. What makes Michael such an incredible dancer is how connected his steps are. It's what creates the fluid, precise appearance of his dancing. The most important part of dance isn't the final poses, but the interim steps it takes to bring you to each of those poses. If you ever watch Michael very carefully, the movements in between the pose, when he moves, are as delicately handled and are given the same amount of importance as the actual choreographed steps themselves. Whereas many dancers will flail about in getting to their mark, not putting any effort or thought in to how they're getting there, Michael actually gets there with a series of smaller, very intricate movements, giving each pose a seamless and flowing connection to each other. And that ability to execute the interim steps with the same detail and care as the final pose also gives his dancing a precisian that most other dancers just don't have. He doesn't have any excess movement in getting to each pose because that movement is as thought out and as precise as hitting the final pose itself, making his dancing extremely accurate. And as you said, he doesn't pause in between the poses, because he isn't thinking about the attention he gives to the interim movement, he does that naturally, like an automatic response. That's natural ability, not something you can learn. A lot of other dancers hit the pose perfectly, but when it comes to getting to the next one, they get there in any way possible, often times throwing themselves in to it or jumping in to it, flinging themselves in to it. They aren't dancing between the poses, or dancing to the poses, they're using random, unprecise and unfluid ways of getting there. Where Michael uses several smaller steps to get to each pose, follwing each other in a precise and controlled sequence, many dancers simply use one, giant, sweeping motion to get there, giving their dancing a sloppier appearance. Which is Chris Brown's problem. And as you said, Michael doesn't count using numbers, like most dancer, he counts according to the rhtyhm of the steps. The sound the steps make, that's how Michael keeps time, not by counting one and two and three and four.

I see no Michael in the choreography, Chris did a couple MJ moves very badly in the beginning which he probably did just to look cool (but failed) and then the stupid choreography kicked in. I think the dude was talking about something else...
